While not overtly scary in a “boo!”-type of way, there’s a frightening mood that lingers throughout the film. The oppressive, suffocating, and uncomfortable vibes are unmatched to anything I’ve seen lately and that makes the movie truly scary.
Maika Monroe is such an underrated queen and I love the type of projects she’s attached to. Nicholas Cage makes the most of his limited screen time and the climactic interrogation scene is straight-up unsettling. Give Alicia Witt her flowers though, she gives the best performance of the film IMO. It’s wildly impressive and subtly layered.
Director Oz Perkins continues to impressive with the slow-burn approach in his films. I loved the unveiling of the mystery, its twists, and the deliberate dialogue. Also, there’s some well-crafted and unnerving visuals.
A disturbing and haunting mood piece of satanic storytelling. Neon also did a fantastic job at marketing this, like wow. 9/10.
