Longlegs is directed by Osgood Perkins and stars Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage.
Saw this with a friend earlier today. Might have the biggest whiplash ever going from Night Swim to this because of the quality difference.
This movie was an interesting watch. Cause I didn’t love it but didn’t not like it either just kind of lands squarely in the middle for me. Performance wise Maika Monroe (who deserves to be in more things) was really good here and Nicolas Cage was well being Nick Cage to the fullest extent. For what the longlegs role was I thought Cage crushed it although his scenes and overall role in the movie come across like they were all filmed in the span of two days not sure If that really matters considering how good he was here. I’ve liked Monroe since I watched It Follows and The Guest and I think she also crushes it here. If her roles in those two movies couldn’t lead to her breaking out as an actress I hope her role here does.
Where I think this movie sorta falls apart is plot wise I feel like this gets too overly convoluted especially in the third act and by the time this ends you might be left with more questions than answers. However the performances and setup is so good it kind of evens out for me. Neon is set to have their biggest opening weekend ever with this movie and between this and A24’s Civil War being their highest opening weekend ever a few months ago it’s nice to see indie distributors winning.
(Btw saw the trailer for Sean Baker’s Anora before this and it looks like this years Uncut Gems. Make of that what you will.)
