I first became a fan of Oz Perkins and his fairy tale style of dark storytelling after I saw The Blackcoat's Daughter. I'm curious to know if this film shares any connection with it as much of the imagery and tone are familiar but well loved territory.
In a market completely over shadowed with Satan and demonic possession, I find that I don't mind Oz's Hail Satan brand of demonic manipulation. It feels little more folksy and even, dare I say, kinda metal? I definitely prefer this and Hereditary over endless Exorcist and Evil Dead retreads.
Of course, I must mention just how intensely unsettling Nicolas Cage is. It's just as upsetting and uncomfortable as you've heard. Great performance in a fantastic movie. Definitely going to require a rewatch.
