The Schwer Mountains 「シュヴェア
Overview[]
Terrain and Ecology[]
The Schwer Mountains is a region with prominent mountains in the Northern Lands. Due to the high altitude, winter lasts long and brings cold, snowy weather. Vegetation is sparse and often covered in snow for extended periods. Only a few coniferous trees grow in the area, with most vegetation consisting of grass and moss that can withstand the harsh climate. Like many areas in the Northern Lands, this region is home to perilous creatures. Notably, monsters are drawn to the sanctuary of the Sword of the Hero, including the Lord of the Mountains and wolf-like monsters, both of which pose significant threats to the area.
Village of the Sword[]
A small village is located deep in the Schwer Mountains, and it acts as the guardian of the Sword of the Hero. The village does not have many buildings and is surrounded by walls due to the number of monsters in the vicinity. The title of village chief is hereditary.
Sanctuary of the Sword of the Hero[]
A cave in the Schwer Mountains near the Village of the Sword is the sanctuary for the Sword of the Hero, supposedly placed by the Goddess herself. Monsters are drawn to the area, however, they are unable to enter the sanctuary itself.
Synopsis[]
History[]
According to legend, at some point long ago, the Goddess placed the Sword of the Hero in a sanctuary in the Schwer Mountains. The legend states that,
“ The Sword of the Hero can only be drawn by the Hero who shall drive away the great calamity that would bring destruction upon this world.
—The 49th chief of the Village of the Sword, in Chapter 25
Throughout history, many heroes have attempted to pull the Sword of the Hero from the stone in the sanctuary. However, all of them have failed. During the adventure of the Hero Party, Himmel attempted to pull the sword from the stone. However, he, too, was unable to make it budge. Despite this, he remained undeterred and resolute in his decision to defeat the Demon King. The Hero Party and the Grandmother of the 49th chief of the Village of the Sword agreed to keep his failure to pull out the sword a secret. Frieren promised the village chief to return periodically and subjugate monsters that are attracted to the sanctuary in order to maintain this secret.
Travels to Äußerst Arc[]
Twenty-nine years after Himmel's death, Frieren's Party travel to the Schwer Mountains. They make their way to the Village of the Sword, which is deep in the mountain range. At the entrance, they are greeted by a child who introduces herself as the 49th chief of the Village of the Sword.
Inside the village, they ask about a broken cabin outside the village, and the chief explains that the Lord of the Mountains destroyed it. Stark tells the story of the village and the legend of the Sword of the Hero that was found near the village. They go into a building and talk with the chief, who reenacts her grandmother's anger at Frieren after she broke her promise to return after fifty years. They have a short conversation about Frieren's task, which they will work on the next day.
Frieren, Fern, and Stark arrive at the cave holding the Sword of the Hero and see monsters surrounding the entrance, which the party eliminates. They then slay the Lord of the Mountains.
Afterward, Stark is surprised to see the sword is still in the cave, as he thought that Himmel had pulled it out of the stone. Frieren reveals that Himmel was unable to pull the sword out. However, despite this failure, he was determined to still defeat the Demon King and admitted to being a fake hero. Frieren states that despite this, Himmel was a true hero, as he saved the world and defeated the Demon King. Having completed their task of subjugating monsters in the area, the party departs from the village and continues their journey north.
Continued Northern Travels Arc[]
After being tasked by Graf Dach to retrieve his family's heirloom sword, Frieren recalls that the last time the sword was stolen, they eventually tracked down the demon who stole it to the top of the Schwer Mountains.[1]
