Graf Granat's Domain 「グラナト
Overview[]
Graf Granat's Domain consists of a fortified city and the land around it, ruled by the nobleman Graf Granat. A wall surrounds the settlement, with the Graf's mansion being centrally located. It has a dungeon to incarcerate offenders. The city features a church, many shops, houses, and inns, and is overall a prosperous town. It is protected by a defensive barrier, erected by the Great Mage Flamme a thousand years prior, that keeps monsters at bay.
Terrain and Ecology[]
The region around Graf Granat's Domain has mostly hilly terrain with snow-glazed mountains in the distance and a forest with majorly coniferous trees. In the town are domesticated animals, such as cats, and outside the barrier of the domain, there are dangerous creatures such as flying monsters and demons. Aura, one of the Seven Sages of Destruction and a demon at war against Graf Granat, devasted the surrounding forest with her undead army of withered soldiers and her henchman Lügner, Linie, and Draht.
The Dungeon[]
The dungeon is a brick-walled dungeon with several cells to incarcerate offenders. A guard is stationed outside the entrance. Each cell appears to have a flat bench and horizontal beams supporting the ceiling.
The Graf's Mansion[]
Graf Granat's mansion is a walled estate with a building several stories high. It features rooms of various sizes, such as a guest room with a balcony. In the house is also the room of Graf Granat's late son, which the Graf regularly cleans. He also displays a sword, granted to him after fighting in a duel, as the only thing that came back when his son died.[1]
Synopsis[]
History[]
On the quest to defeat the Demon King, the Hero Party arrived near Graf Granat's Domain. They had a skirmish with Aura the Guillotine and wounded her, leaving her to flee and go into hiding.
After Himmel's death, Aura reappeared and waged war against Graf Granat, which led to the death of his son ten years prior to the arrival of Frieren's Party.[1]
Aura the Guillotine Arc[]
Twenty-eight years after Himmel's passing, Frieren's Party enter the main town of Graf Granat's Domain. As the trio walks into town, Frieren senses some demons and tries to kill them, but she is stopped by guards. The three demons, led by Lügner, are supposedly peace envoys, but Frieren tells Lügner that he and the other demons are savage monsters that only mimic human speech. Frieren is thrown into the dungeon for attempting to attack the messengers, and Fern and Stark investigate the situation in the town, learning that Aura the Guillotine, a demon who served the Demon King as one of the Seven Sages of Destruction, has requested peace after being long at war with the town. They relay this information to Frieren, but Frieren states that it is futile to negotiate with the demons, as they only use words as a means of deception rather than communication. She decides to break out of the dungeon once the disorder starts. Meanwhile, Lügner wonders where he has seen Frieren before and smiles as she is the only one who knows the true nature of demons.
Graf Granat brings the demons into his late son's old room and tells them about him. He takes a sword on display, the only thing that came back after his son's death, and threatens the demons as vengeance for his son, declaring that he has no intention of reconciliation. However, Lügner claims that his father was also killed in the war, leading to Graf Granat emphasizing with him. Once the Graf leaves, Lügner explains to the one of the other envoys, the demon girl Linie, that his claim was actually a lie to placate the Graf. Meanwhile, the third envoy demon, Draht, goes to the dungeon to try to assassinate Frieren and decapitates a guard stationed outside in the process. He fails, and she is able to kill him easily. As Frieren exits the cell, she discovers the dead guard.
While Frieren is in the dungeon, Fern and Stark sit outside of a restaurant and plan their next actions, ultimately deciding that they will try and appeal to the Graf for Frieren's release. Back in the mansion's guest room, Lügner and Linie realizes Draht had been killed after being unable to detect his mana. They reconvene with the Graf and his guards, where Graf Granat discusses the escape of Frieren and the death of a guard. He then confronts Lügner, suspecting that Draht had beheaded the guard, as Frieren, who had allowed herself to be peacefully captured despite being a skilled mage, would understand the punishment associated with killing a guard. With his original plan now futile, Lügner reveals his true colors, killing the guards and wounding Graf Granat with his blood magic. Lügner tells the Graf his actual intention: removing the protective barrier surrounding the town.
As Fern and Stark head to the Graf's mansion, they notice a cloaked Frieren, who updates them and states that she will escape town to avoid punishment as the main suspect for the guard's death. Fern requests Frieren to not abandon the town, but Frieren tells her that the two of them are capable of dealing with Lügner and Linie. Frieren then sets her eye on Aura, who is at the outskirts the town with her undead army.
In the evening, Fern and Stark enter the Graf's mansion to kill the demons. Meanwhile, Lügner and Linie try to find a way to dispel the barrier through questioning the Graf, who is bound to a chair. Lügner gives him time to think, and he and Linie search for a grimoire that can dispel the barrier within the mansion. After the demons leave, Stark enters the room and tries to free the Graf. However, Lügner and Linie return from their search during the process, and Stark attempts to fight them. Lügner pins him down with his magic, but he does not detect Fern, who appears behind the window and blasts him with Zoltraak, severely wounding him. Given the severity of the Graf's wounds, Fern and Stark end up retreating. Linie attempts to pursue them, but Lügner advises her not to go alone, as he suspects that the magic that Fern used is from Frieren the Slayer, the mage that has led the most demons to their graves. In the meantime, Frieren arrives at the outskirts of the domain and confronts Aura and her army.
Fern, Stark, and the Graf make it to the town's church, where the Graf's wounds are treated. Fern and Stark go outside to evacuate the town and bring back Frieren, but Fern discovers mana on their blood-stained clothes on the way. They are promptly attacked by Lügner and Linie, and Linie knocks Stark off the building with an axe she conjured, leaving Fern to fight against Lügner and his blood magic, Balterie. Stark realizes Linie's magic, Erfassen, allows her to copy the movements of past warriors she had analyzed, including Eisen's, and he gets beaten down to the ground two times by her attacks. However, he realizes his master's technique dealt heavier blows than Linie's imitation, and he finishes her off with his Lightning Strike technique. With Lügner distracted by Linie's defeat, Fern is able to deal a deadly wound to him with Zoltraak. She casts the final blow to Lügner shortly after he notices that Fern and her master both suppress their mana.
As Fern and Stark battle against the envoys, Frieren face off against Aura outside of the town. Aura sends her army to attack Frieren, but she evades the attacks of the undead soldiers and releases some of them with dispelling magic, which removes the influence of Aura's Scales of Obedience. After a conversation with Frieren, Aura casts her Auserlese spell, which places her soul and Frieren's soul on the Scales of Obedience. Confident in her victory, Aura walks towards Frieren and takes up a sword from an undead soldier to personally behead the elf. However, the balance of the scales shifts, and Frieren reveals that she was suppressing her mana for over a thousand years, much longer than Aura's 500 years of life, and she releases her true mana. Having tipped the Scales in her favor, Frieren takes control of Aura. She commands the demon to kill herself, which she forcefully obeys by decapitating herself.[2]
After the victory over Aura and her henchman, the town celebrates. Frieren, Fern, and Stark receive treatment for their wounds and help rebuild the damages. A commemoration is arranged, where Frieren receives a grimoire and Fern and Stark receive new winter outfits as gifts. At their farewell, the party discusses the next step: entering the Locations#Northern Plateau, which requires them to be accompanied by a first-class mage. Frieren and Fern thus decide to take the First-Class Mage Exam in Äußerst.[3]
First-Class Mage Exam Arc[]
Around the same time Frieren, Fern and Stark reach the city of Äußerst, three months prior to the First-Class Mage Exam, Übel meets Kraft on the road by Graf Granat's Domain. After a brief interaction with Kraft, Übel continues traveling north to Äußerst.[4]
