Ecology
This article contains a list of named monsters, fauna, and flora that appear within the world of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End.

The ecology depicted in the world of the manga features a rich environment and many different living organisms. The anime expands the world-building, showing the life forms and environment the manga draws in animated sequences not necessarily in the same scenes as they are in panels of the source material.

In the world of Frieren species can be categorized into human-like, demons, monsters, fauna and flora. The manga shows various species the protagonists interact with and have names for, but also many that are not further specified and just enrich the world-building so as to not depict a sterile world. Animals and plants are often utilized as resources by characters.

During the travels of the Hero Party and Frieren's Party, the adventurers traverse various landscapes with different kinds of organisms. The world is set up with climate zones in multiple locations that directly influence a biome. Warmer global weather patterns shape the Central Lands and get colder towards the Northern Lands. There are differentiations between local climates in coastal regions for example around the city of Warm or that of high altitude with an example being the Schwer Mountains. This informs a variety of ecological systems like oceans, bogs, forests, alpine regions, underground cavities, snowfields and more. The world of Frieren showcases a large biodiversity that occupies habitats in the water, on land and even species that live all their lives in the sky. With the richness of depiction full food chains can be assumed, with plants at the fundament that are nourishment for insects, herbivore species up to large carnivore creatures.

The beings seem to be adapted to the ecological system they are part of, which is showcased as the seed-rats populate milder climates,[1] and they have perhaps a related species in the northern part of the continent.[2] But also the opposite with a species of tortoise that is not much affected by environmental conditions.[1][3] The fantasy setting makes it possible that species exist, which subvert exactions of the real world, like the Icicle Cherry Blossom Tree that blooms in winter.[3]

Plenty of life has mana as a property, but it can also be infused into nonliving matter like Magic-nullifying Crystals,[4] and seems to be a property of the world itself. Some species can gather mana in their mana-pool that can be trained over the lifetime to become vast,[5] but others do fill in niches as to become very sensible to it and don't have much themselves to not being noticed like Stille birds.[6] As creatures interact with the environment they also have magical properties, that can be used as ingredients for magical rituals such as Shadow Dragon's Horn.[7] Different objects of the environment like Holy Snow Crystals can be used for the magical properties.[8]

Human-like species[]

Under the umbrella term humanity are not only humans summarized, but also elves and dwarfs.

Monsters[]

Monsters are classified as creatures that disintegrate into mana-particle upon death. They often utilize mana and may be aggressive or passive. Some are territorial and others will traverse great distances. They are drawn to objects with magical properties like the monsters that are attracted by the Hero's Sword,[9] or just to consume the mana of their pray like Chaos Flowers.[10]

Demons[]

Demons are defined as "monsters that use the power of words" by the Great Mage Flamme.[11] Due to their prevalence and their classification as a species, they have been excluded from this list.

A list of demons in the world of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End can be found here.

Fauna[]

Under Fauna are notable animal species mentioned in the series. The fauna can be divided into wildlife and domesticated animals. Some are not only used as resources for sustenance but also for tasks like cats for vermin decimation. Horse labor to pull carriages is one of the most depicted interactions with unnamed creatures. Many fauna are depicted in the manga without being directly interacted with and are there to create an illusion of a lived-in world.

Flora[]

Under Flora are notable plant species mentioned in the series. They are the basis of the ecosystems and grow in the wild or are harvested as domesticated species by humans. Humans use plants not only as sustenance or because of the medicinal properties of some but also as flowers to enrich daily life. Many flora are not directly interacted with and serve as depictions for backgrounds but are integral in making the fictional world more believable.

Themes[]

Behaviorism[]

An influence on the behavior of creatures is their variation in life expectance and the experiences they make while interacting with species of their own kind and the environment. Certain species are depicted to form a society like humans down to small groups, like animals that hunt together as a pack and demons who live their lives solitarily minding only their individual needs.

Convergent Evolution[]

In Chapter 88 two demons have a conversation about the topic of convergent evolution. One was taught about it by the Demon King and explains it pointing at the examples of the skeletal structures of a "shark" as a fish and an "orca" as a mammal that share similar appearance and the ocean as habitat.

Coexistence[]

While human-like species are the dominant lifeform in the biosphere interacting with the environment and also changing it, they are antagonized by the other apex predator the demons that compete over territorial influence. Humanity has conquered many domains of the world but has to guard their living space. Both sides are engaged in warfare with equal utilization of magic for offensive and defensive purposes. A first exploration of the theme of coexistence is done in Chapter 14 where a naïve man wants to overcome the prejudice and takes in a young demon child. However, he is killed. In later chapters, it is explained that the Demon King wished for coexistence but it ended in the decimation down to one-third of humankind.[24] Furthermore another demon explores his way to coexistence,[25] but the actions he takes are to the detriment of humans.[26]

Environmentalism[]

In Chapter 80 the exploitation of the environment, to gather resources, is a plot point that leads Frieren to accept a quest to set up a protective barrier against people. The request is given by an adventurer who has grown up in the region. He wants to preserve the sight of a large deposit of Holy Snow Crystals.

Creationism[]

The world of Frieren was brought into existence by the Goddess of Creation.

Trivia[]

  • The unnamed cow-dog creature that Fern recalls defeating when fighting Lügner is depicted as fauna in the manga, as it does not dissolve into mana particles upon defeat. However, in the anime, the creature is shown to start dissipating into mana, thus it has been classified as a monster.
  • Frieren states that the icicle cherry blossom may be her favorite winter flower.[27]
  • The monster / dragon that chases the Hero Party in the flashback of Frieren in Chapter 1 and Chapter 34 should resemble the same dragon, is animated into two different creatures in Episode 1 and Episode 16 in the anime adaptation. It appears also in flashback in Chapter 61.
  • Though the official Viz English translation calls the Fresser both a lion-pig[28] and a lion-bear,[19] the second is likely a mistake and may have been intended to be "lion-boar" instead.
  • Wirbel first mentions that the Hero Party fought the Hell Emperor Dragon in Chapter 59. The Hero Party actually encounter this dragon in Chapter 113, though it is translated in this chapter as the Abyssal Dragon by Viz.
  • Mimic ranked the following in the official popularity polls:
    • 3rd in the first popularity contest with 8,701,779 points.
    • 10th in the second popularity contest with 341,347 votes, where multiple votes per character were counted.
      • In this same contest, Mimic ranked 4th when counting only unique votes (one vote per character per person).

Etymology[]

  • "Einsam" is German for "lonely / lonesome".
  • "Geisel" is German for "hostage", possibly referring to the corpse the monster uses as bait.
    • Furthermore, the identically pronounced word "Geißel" / "Geissel" is German for "flagellum / scourge", which might refer to the monster's whip-like tail.
  • "Fresser" is German for "devourer / glutton / feeder".
  • "Stille" is German for "silence / calmness".

Notes[]

  1. While the Einsam are referred to as "Phantom Demons," they are considered monsters and do not fall under the category of the human-like demons evolved from monsters. The kanji of "demon" in "Phantom Demon" is "鬼" (oni), while the kanji for the evolved-from-monsters demons is " () (ぞく) " (mazoku).
  2. The anime did not adopt the flashback of the young Himmel defeating the eagle-like monster. The scene in the flashback is extended upon in anthology: The Adventures of the Hero Himmel to the Frieren manga.
  3. In Episode 14, the anime features an original addition in its adaptation of Chapter 30, where the creature Stark defeats for one of the party's meals has a boar-like appearance and appears to have a lion's tail. This may be the first instance of a Fresser in the anime
