The Alt Woods 「アルト
Overview[]
Terrain and Ecology[]
The Alt Woods is a densely forested region with hills, rivers, and bottomless swamps. Various herbs in the woods can be foraged. The rivers are home to fish, while the woods are filled with wild fruits and herbs. The locality is shown to have farmlands used to produce abundant crops. As with most places in the Northern Lands, travelers may encounter dangerous creatures. Most notably, venomous creatures are present in the area. These include venomous snakes, one of which bites Stark and releases venom that can only be cured in the early stages.
Village[]
A small and modest village with some farmlands and a river is located within the Alt Woods, and it is Sein and his brother's hometown. Warrior Gorilla once lived in the village, but he set out ten years prior to adventure around the Northern Lands. In the autumn, the town holds a harvest festival.[1]
Synopsis[]
History[]

A mage uses photo-taking magic to take a photo of Sein and Gorilla.
Sein, his brother, and Gorilla grew up in the village in the Alt Woods. At some point early in their childhood, Sein and his brother's parents passed away. Sein's brother would take on the responsibility of caring for his brother. Both Sein and Gorilla had dreams of leaving the village and adventuring. They would often play rambunctiously in the village, and Sein would often share these dreams with his brother. When they were younger, a traveling mage visited the village and took a picture of Sein and Gorilla together using photo-taking magic. It is unknown when Sein and his brother began their work in the clergy, but they both grew up to be skilled with the Goddess's Magic.
Heiter visited the village while Sein was younger in an official capacity from the Holy City of Strahl. He conducted inspections of the church and assessed Sein's brother to be the best priest in the region and conferred upon him a Holy Symbol. He additionally invited Sein's brother to work in the Holy City, but Sein's brother refused, as he was fine with his life in the village and did not want to take Sein's hometown away from him. Sein overhears this and begins to feel guilty for the perceived sacrifice his brother made for him.

Ten years prior to Frieren's Party's visit to the village, Gorilla decided to go out and travel in the Northern Lands. He asked Sein to come with him, as they had both wanted to adventure since childhood. However, Sein refused him, and Gorilla stated that he will return in three years' time for the village's annual harvest festival. However, ten years go by without word from Gorilla, and Sein began to believe he was dead.
Travels to Äußerst Arc[]

Sein treats Stark's venomous snakebite with the Goddess's Magic.
Twenty-nine years after Himmel's death, Frieren encounters Sein stuck in a swamp while she is gathering herbs. He tells her his ambition of becoming an adventurer, remembering in a flashback the time when his friend, Warrior Gorilla, tried to take him on an adventure. When Fern appears, Frieren remembers a spell to pull someone out of a bottomless swamp. Frieren's Party part ways with Sein near his village, and he warns them about the venomous animals in the forest. Shortly after that, Stark is bitten by a venomous snake. To get Stark cured, Frieren and Fern bring him to Sein's village. They visit the local church and meet Sein, who, as a priest, can treat the snake bite.
After seeing Sein's competency with the Goddess's Magic, Frieren is determined that Sein has to join her party. Stark attempts to convince Sein to join by visiting him in a bar. They both place bets, and Sein says he will join the party if Stark wins. However, the village chief wins the gamble and takes it all, leaving them humiliated in their underwear, and they receive help from Fern and Frieren. At that, Frieren remembers in a flashback how Himmel once convinced her to join the Hero Party.

Preperations are taken for the harvest festival in the village.
The next days Frieren's party helps out in the village with various tasks while the harvest festival takes place. Sein rejects all attempts to convince him and declares he does not want to join the party. Frieren's party visits Sein's brother in the church to think of other approaches. Sein's brother tells them that Sein likes older ladies, prompting the idea to introduce Sein to an older lady: Frieren. Outside, Frieren attempts to flirt with Sein by using her master's secret technique: blowing him a kiss. It fails, which surprises Frieren, as she remembered how well Himmel was taken aback when she tried the technique on him. Sein repeats his intent to not become an adventurer. He reasons that he wishes not to leave his brother alone because his brother stayed in the village for him. Upon hearing this, Sein's brother is full of indignation, and he slaps Sein and tells him that he did not regret his choice to stay. He demands Sein to overthink his regrets. At last convinced, Sein decides to become an adventurer and joins the party on their journey to Aureole, with his goal being to find Gorilla.
