Introduction

Rivaleリヴァーレ Rivuāre?, also known as the Bloody God of War () () られし軍神 (ぐんしん) Chinura reshi gunshin?, is a Greater Demon. Alongside fellow Greater Demons Solitär, Tot and Grausam, he arrives at the Monument of the Goddess when the Demon King senses that Frieren has interfered with space-time. Rivale fights Eisen, and out of respect for Eisen's strength, chooses to face Eisen with an axe. He survives the encounter and later attacks Stark's village.

Personality[]

Rivale is an old demon who is typically laid-back and addresses fellow Greater Demons in a casual manner. He shows little interest in detailed plans or discussions, preferring to leave these matters to others. Unlike many demons who are concerned with longevity or survival, Rivale is solely focused on the thrill of combat. He believes that there is no secret to a long life; one simply needs to fight with all their might.

When facing a strong opponent, Rivale relishes in the opportunity to engage in battle. Notably, upon hearing that his fellow Greater Demons were reluctant to face the Hero Party directly, he gladly takes the honor to be the vanguard instead. Unlike other demons who express pride to the point of arrogance when comparing their magic to other mages, Rivale respects fellow powerful warriors, such as Eisen. He tells Eisen that he commends his valor, and to show his respect, chooses to fight Eisen with the same weapon.

Appearance[]

Rivale is an extremely tall demon, towering over even other notably tall demons such as Grausam. He has long, light colored hair and like all demons has two horns curving out of his head. Rivale's horns are medium-length and point straight up. Rivale's teeth are slightly pointed and his nails are dark and sharp. He wears a long, dark colored tunic tied at the waist and a short, high collar black coat on top. His coat is adorned with epaulettes and a large circular buckle at the neck. Beneath his tunic, Rivale wears light colored pants and dark boots.

After his fight with Eisen, Rivale sports a slash across his right eye.

Synopsis[]

History[]

When future Frieren was sent back in time, seven years into the Hero Party’s journey, Rivale joined his fellow demons Solitär and Grausam in a plan to steal Frieren’s memories. During the battle, Eisen fought Rivale to give Frieren enough time to escape to the monument and return to the future.

Sometime after the death of the Hero Himmel, Rivale arrived in Stark's hometown in the Klee Region and razes the village. During the encounter, he fought Stoltz and the other warriors of the village and presumably kills them all, leaving Stark as the only survivor.

Goddess's Monument Arc[]

Rivale is one of the four Greater Demons summoned to the Monument of the Goddess after the Demon King senses a disturbance in space-time. After Tot leaves, Rivale, Solitär, and Grausam proceed with the attack on the Hero Party, confronting them seven years into their journey at Kino Pass. Rivale takes the lead and relishes in fighting Eisen, who is the first opponent he has encountered in a century to block one of his punches. Rivale then summons an axe and tells Eisen that he will fight him with the same weapon that he uses out of respect. However, their fight ends inconclusively, as Eisen knocks Rivale off the cliff with a Lightning Strike once Himmel orders him to retreat.

Relationships[]

Eisen[]

Rivale respects Eisen's strength and commends Eisen's bravery. Eisen is the first person that Rivale has encountered in one hundred years that is able to stop one of his blows, which prompts Rivale to introduce himself and ask after Eisen's name. He recognizes Eisen as a warrior of renown and states that he has longed to fight him. Rivale chooses to fight Eisen using Eisen's preferred choice of weapon, an axe. When Eisen ends their fight at an impasse and retreats, Rivale tells him that he has not had such an enjoyable fight in a long time.

Abilities[]

True to his title as the Bloody God of War, Rivale is the strongest warrior amongst demonkind.[1] His strength rivals that of Eisen's.

  • Hand-to-hand combat proficiency: Rivale originally attacks Eisen with his fists. His blow is able to push a defending Eisen several meters backwards. He states that it has taken him a century to meet someone able to stop his fist.
  • Weapon generation: Rivale is able to create solid weapons out of mana and wield them with proficiency.
    • Axe proficiency: Out of respect for Eisen's strength, Rivale chooses to fight Eisen with Eisen's preferred choice of weapon, an axe. He is able to match Eisen in the fight and manages to cut Eisen.
