Renee Marie Bumb is the chief judge of the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey. She was nominated by George W. Bush on January 25, 2006. In 2023, Bumb became the chief judge of the court.[1]

Early life and education

Born in Bellevue, Ohio, Bumb graduated from Ohio State University with her bachelor's degree in 1981 and from the University of Chicago with her master's degree in 1983. Bumb received her J.D. from the Rutgers School of Law in 1987.[1]

Professional career

Bumb was a law clerk for the Honorable Garrett Brown in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey from 1987 to 1988 before entering private practice in New Jersey until 1991. Bumb was an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey U.S. Attorney's Office from 1991 to 2006.[1]

Judicial career

District of New Jersey

Bumb was nominated to the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey by President George W. Bush on January 25, 2006 to a seat vacated by William Walls as Walls assumed senior status. Bumb was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on June 6, 2006 on a Senate vote and received commission on June 12, 2006.[2][3] Bumb became the chief judge of the court in 2023.[1]

Judge Bumb presided in the case of former Cherry Hill Code Inspector Anthony Saccomanno. Saccomanno pleaded guilty in June of 2009 of mail fraud and accepting bribes in order to give favorable contracts to a building inspection vendor. The judge sentenced Saccomanno on March 9, 2010 to 22 months in prison and a $20,000 fine.[4]
