Lonny R. Suko is a federal judge on senior status for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Washington. He joined the court in 2003 after being nominated by President George W. Bush. Suko assumed the position of chief judge July 13, 2009, and stepped down from that position in 2011.[1] Suko retired from the court on November 1, 2013, and assumed the role of senior judge.[2]

Early life and education

A Washington native, Suko graduated from Washington State University with his bachelor's degree in 1965 and his J.D. from the University of Idaho College of Law in 1968.

Professional career

Suko began his legal career as a law clerk for federal district judge Charles Powell in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Washington from 1968 to 1969 before spending the rest of his legal career as a private practice attorney licensed in the State of Washington from 1969 to 1995.

Judicial career

Eastern District of Washington

Suko began his federal judicial career in 1971 as a magistrate judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Washington. Suko was re-appointed to four-year term extensions in 1975, 1979, 1983, and 1987 before stepping aside from part-time duty in 1991. Suko was re-appointed to a full eight-year term in 1995 and served in the role until 2003.

Suko was nominated by George W. Bush on April 28, 2003, to a seat vacated by William Nielsen as Nielsen assumed senior status. Suko was confirmed by the Senate on July 15, 2003 and received commission on July 16, 2003. Suko took senior status on November 1, 2013, after 10 years of service.[2][3]
