Timothy Mark Burgess is a federal judge on senior status with the United States District Court for the District of Alaska. He served as chief judge from 2015 to 2021. He joined the court in 2006 after being nominated by President George W. Bush (R).[1]

Burgess assumed senior status on December 31, 2021.[2][3][4]

Biography

Early life and education

A native of California, Burgess graduated from Canada College with his associate degree in 1976 and later graduated from the University of Alaska in Fairbanks with a bachelor's degree in 1978. He went on to obtain a master's in business administration in 1982 before graduating from Northeastern University Law School with his J.D. degree in 1987.[1]

Professional career

Burgess was a private practice attorney licensed in the State of Alaska from 1987 to 1989 before joining the US Attorney's Office as an assistant U.S. attorney for the District of Alaska from 1989 to 2001. In 2001, Burgess was nominated by President George W. Bush as U.S. attorney for the District of Alaska, where he served until 2005.[1]

Judicial career

On the recommendation of U.S. Senators Ted Stevens (R) and Frank Murkowski (R), Burgess was nominated by President George W. Bush on July 28, 2005, to a seat vacated by James Singleton as Singleton assumed senior status. Burgess was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on December 21, 2005, on a senate vote and received commission on January 23, 2006.[1] Burgess assumed senior status on December 31, 2021.[5]
