Joan Ericksen is a federal judge on senior status with the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota. She joined the court in 2002 after being nominated by President George W. Bush. She assumed senior status on October 15, 2019.

Ericksen is also a judge on the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. She was appointed by Chief Justice John Roberts on April 3, 2023.[1]

Early life and education

Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, Ericksen graduated from St. Olaf College in 1977 with her bachelor's degree and later obtained her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Minnesota in 1981.[2]

Professional career

Ericksen was a private practice attorney in Minnesota from 1981 to 1983. In 1983, Ericksen joined the Minnesota US Attorney's Office as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota from 1983 to 1993. Ericksen returned to private practice until 1995 when she was elected judge for the 4th Judicial District Court in Hennepin County from 1995 to 1998. In 1998, Ericksen was appointed by Minnesota Governor Arne Carlson as an associate justice in the Minnesota Supreme Court where she served from 1998 until 2002.[2]

Ericksen is a judge on the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. She was appointed by Chief Justice John Roberts on April 3, 2023.[1]

District of Minnesota

On the recommendation of Senator Norm Coleman, Ericksen was nominated to the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota by President George W. Bush on January 23, 2002, to a seat vacated by Paul Magnuson. Ericksen was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on April 25, 2002, on a Senate vote and received commission on May 1, 2002.[3]

Ericksen assumed senior status on October 15, 2019.
