Henry Jacob Friendly (1903-1986) was a federal judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit. He joined the court in 1959 after an appointment from Dwight Eisenhower. At the time of appointment, he was a private practice attorney and the Vice president and general counsel of Pan American World Airways. He served as chief judge from 1971-1973. He assumed senior status on April 15, 1974, and served in that capacity until his death on March 11, 1986.

Judicial nominations and appointments

Second Circuit

Friendly was nominated by President Dwight Eisenhower on March 10, 1959, to a seat vacated by Harold Medina; he was confirmed by the Senate on September 9, 1959, and received his commission on September 10th. He served as chief judge from 1971-1973. He assumed senior status on April 15, 1974, and served in that capacity until his death on March 11, 1986. He was succeeded to the post by Ellsworth Van Graafeiland.
