In 2009, Judge Block presided in the trial of former Bear Stearns hedge fund managers Ralph Cioffi and Matthew Tannin. The executives were charged with securities fraud in connection to the collapse of the company in 2008 which led to JP Morgan Chase buying the company.[2]

A jury acquitted both Cioffi and Tannin of wrongdoing in November 2009. However, they settled a civil suit with the Securities and Exchange Commission in 2012 by agreeing to pay approximately $1 million.[3][4]
