Patti B. Saris (b. 1951) is a federal judge on the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. She joined the court in 1993 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton. At the time of appointment, Saris served as a magistrate judge for the court. Saris was the chief judge from 2013 to 2019.[1]

On November 20, 2023, Saris announced that she would assume senior status upon the commission of her successor.[2]

Early life and education

Born in Massachusetts, Saris graduated from Radcliffe College with her bachelor's degree in 1973 and later from Harvard Law School with her J.D. degree in 1976.[1]

Judicial career

US Sentencing Commission

Judge Saris was nominated by President Barack Obama as the new Chairperson of the U.S. Sentencing Commission. Saris worked for the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy who created the legislation to form the Sentencing Commission.[3]

In December 2010, the U.S. Senate confirmed Saris as Chair of the U.S. Sentencing Commission.[4]

District of Massachusetts

On the recommendation of U.S. Senators John Kerry and Ted Kennedy, Saris was nominated to the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts by President Bill Clinton on October 27, 1993, to a seat vacated by Walter Skinner. Saris was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on November 20, 1993, on voice vote and received commission on November 24, 1993.[5]
