Daniel T. K. Hurley is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. He joined the court in 1994 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton. He is serving on senior status.
Early life and education
A native of Massachusetts, Hurley first attended St. Vincent de Paul Major Seminary in attempts of being an ordained Roman Catholic Priest, but later transferred to St. Anselm College where he graduated with his bachelor's degree in 1964 then later earned his J.D. degree from George Washington University Law School in 1968.[1]
Professional career
After law school, Hurley had two stints as a Law clerk, first for former federal judge John Pratt in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia from 1968 to 1969 and for former Federal Appeals Judge Roger Robb in the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Also, in 1969, Hurley was active in the advocacy towards ending the war in Vietnam as a Volunteer of the Vietnam Moratorium Committee. In 1970, Hurley moved to Florida to become the Assistant county solicitor for Palm Beach County from 1970 to 1972 then started his prosecutorial career as a Assistant State's Attorney for the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit of Florida from 1973 to 1975. In 1975, Hurley started his judicial career as a County court judge in the Palm Beach County Court until 1977 when he was promoted via appointment as a circuit court judge for the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit of Florida until 1979. From 1979 to 1986, Hurley was appointed a Appeals Judge by Florida Governor Bob Graham for Fourth District Court of Appeal of Florida when later in 1986, Hurley became again a circuit court judge in the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit of Florida until his appointment to the federal bench in 1994.[1]
Judicial career
Southern District of Florida
On the recommendation of former Florida Governor and U.S. Senator Bob Graham, Hurley was nominated to the Southern District of Florida by President Bill Clinton on November 10, 1993 to a seat vacated by James Paine. Hurley was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on March 10, 1994 on a Senate vote and received commission on March 11, 1994. He assumed senior status on February 24, 2009.[1] Hurley was succeeded in this position by Kathleen M. Williams.
