Willie Louis Sands is an Article III federal judge on senior status for the United States District Court for the Middle District of Georgia. He joined the court in 1994 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton. Prior to joining the court, Sands was a judge on the Macon Judicial Circuit.[1] Sands assumed senior status on April 12, 2014.[2]

Education

Sands graduated from Mercer University with his bachelor's degree in 1971 and from the Mercer University School of Law with his J.D. in 1974.[1]

Military career

Sands served in the U.S. Army Reserve Signal Corps as a Second Lieutenant in 1974 and in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1974 to 1980.[1]

Middle District of Georgia

On the recommendation of U.S. Senator Sam Nunn, Sands was nominated to the United States District Court for the Middle District of Georgia by President Bill Clinton on February 9, 1994, to a new seat created by 104 Stat. 5089. Sands was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 6, 1994, on a majority voice vote and received commission on May 9, 1994.[3] Sands served as the chief judge of the Middle District of Georgia from 2001 to 2006.[1]
