Alegnon Marbley is the chief judge on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. He joined the court in 1997 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton (D).[1]

On October 23, 2023, Marbley announced that he would assume senior status upon the confirmation of his successor.[2] On November 8, 2024, withdrew his intention to assume senior status.[3]

Early life and education

A native of Morehead City, North Carolina, Marbley graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, with his bachelor's degree in 1976 and from the Northwestern University School of Law with his J.D. in 1979.[1] Marbley received an honorary doctor of laws from Capital University in 2000.[4]

Marbley was nominated by President Bill Clinton on July 31, 1997, to a seat vacated by John Holschuh. The American Bar Association rated Marbley Majority Qualified, Minority Well Qualified for the nomination. Hearings on Marbley's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on September 30, 1997, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) on October 9, 1997. Marbley was confirmed on a recorded 91-0 vote of the U.S. Senate on October 27, 1997, and he received his commission on November 7, 1997.[1][5][6]
