In 2010, Judge Polster approved a request from Mahoning County officials to close half of the county jail due a financial crisis affecting the county. The meeting came after the cash-strapped county gave lay-off notices to 101 sheriff's deputies that worked in the jail.[5]

Three years after closing, the full Mahoning County Jail reopened in April 2013. In addition, seven new deputies were hired.[6]
