Leonie M. Brinkema is a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. She joined the court in 1993 after an appointment from President Bill Clinton (D).

Early life and education

Born in Teaneck, New Jersey, Brinkema graduated from Rutgers University with her bachelor's degree in 1966. She earned her master's in legal studies from Rutgers University in 1970. She earned her J.D. from Cornell Law School in 1976.[1]

Brinkema was nominated to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia by President Bill Clinton on August 6, 1993, to a seat vacated by Albert Bryan Jr. The American Bar Association rated Brinkema Unanimously Well Qualified for the nomination. Hearings on Brinkema's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on October 7, 1993, and her nomination was reported by then-U.S. Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.) on October 14, 1993. Brinkema was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on October 18, 1993, and she received her commission on October 20, 1993.[2][3][4]

Brinkema served as a federal magistrate judge for the Eastern District of Virginia from 1985 to 1993.[2]
