James Martin Munley was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. He joined the court in 1998 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton (D). Munley assumed senior status on January 30, 2009. His service ended when he died on March 22, 2020.

Early life and education

A native of Scranton, Pennsylvania, Munley graduated from the University of Scranton with his bachelor's degree in 1958 and from Temple University School of Law with his LL.B. in 1963.[1]

Military service

Munley served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960.[1]

Munley was nominated by President Bill Clinton on June 4, 1998, to a seat on the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania vacated by William Caldwell. The American Bar Association rated Munley Unanimously Qualified for the nomination. Hearings on Munley's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on October 6, 1998, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) on October 8, 1998. Munley was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on October 21, 1998, and he received his commission the next day. Munley elected to take senior status beginning on January 30, 2009. He was succeeded in this position by Judge Robert David Mariani. Munley's service ended on March 22, 2020, when he died.[1][2][3]
