Martha Vazquez is a federal judge on senior status with the United States District Court for the District of New Mexico. She joined the Court in 1993 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton (D). Vazquez served as the chief judge of the Court from 2003-2010.[1] Vazquez assumed senior status on December 31, 2021.[2]

Prior to her appointment, Vazquez was a private practice attorney in New Mexico.[1]

Biography

Early life and education

Born in Santa Barbara, California, Vazquez received her bachelor's degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1975 and her Juris Doctor degree in 1978.[1]

Professional career

Vazquez was a clerk for Michigan Migrant Legal Services in 1979. Vazquez served as an assistant public defender for the State of New Mexico Public Defender Department until 1981. After that, she worked in private practice in New Mexico until 1993.[1]

Judicial career

District of New Mexico

Vazquez was nominated to the United States District Court for the District of New Mexico by President Bill Clinton on August 6, 1993, to a seat vacated by Santiago E. Campos, as Campos assumed senior status. Vazquez was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on September 30, 1993, on a Senate vote and received commission on October 1, 1993.[3] Vazquez served as the chief judge of the Court from 2003-2010. She assumed senior status on December 31, 2021.[1]
