I’ll just start up by saying that I don’t think the movie is as scary or disturbing as promos make it out to be. However it is still a very solid horror/thriller that has a consistent sense of dread throughout and many instances that were pretty unsettling and grim. I was completely invested in the story from start to finish and seeing how things unfold, and it all leads to a very intense and crazy final act. Osgood Perkins continues to win me over with his direction ever since Blackcoat’s Daughter. Between his directing and writing he has such a distinct vision of the kind of story he wants to tell. Even if the script isn’t the best, his direction is always top notch. The cast does a great job here. Maika Monroe’s performance is so subtle as Lee who is fairly closed off and only focused on the task at hand but we gradually see her unravel as the stakes heighten. Nicolas Cage is extremely creepy and unsettling here. He gave me vibes of Billy in Black Christmas mixed with Heath Ledger’s Joker. I also liked Blair Underwood as Lee’s superior in the case. But it’s Alicia Witt who honestly gives the best performance as Lee’s drug addicted and troubled mom. So even though it wasn’t as hardcore as some made it out, I was so completely invested with what I was given.
