Still deciding my thoughts on this one. Have to see it again before I fully make up my mind and this rating could go down or up. All I know is that I thought the beginning, and at least first half, was expertly done. So much tension, atmosphere, impending doom and dread. Memorable shots, truly creepy sequences. Then it just sort of got a little too goofy for its own good. I can't tell if I thought Nic Cage was genius and brilliant or genuinely terrible. Whatever it was, it was a big swing and I appreciated the risk and the way in which it will be debated and discussed for years to come, I'm sure. It's just that I don't think I should necessarily be laughing at a movie like this and there were several times where I laughed out loud. One scene had me in a literal fit of giggles. And I don't know, compared to where we started which was so rich with tension, I think there's something to be said for that. Regardless, I really enjoyed the blending of a gritty, true crime FBI story with one that ventures into some possible supernatural occult territory. I thought the handling of that was well done and quite interesting. I still think it was a very solid movie and one that I do look forward to revisiting, just need to iron out how effective I think is as a whole. Love that it's crushing at the theater, loved that the marketing paid off. Hate that it's being pedaled as something its ultimately not and anytime you deem something "the scariest ever" you set yourself up for failure. Luckily I've grown out of the period of my life where I believed in hype like that. Maika Monroe can do no wrong, has done no wrong, and will continue to do no wrong.
