Matt’s review published on Letterboxd:
Even if I tried as hard as I could, I don’t think I will ever forget this movie.
Longlegs is not a traditional “scary movie” & the horrors are kept off screen for most of the film yet there is a sense of dread that loomed over me for the entire duration. I never felt quite right. There were moments that startled me, moments that made me wince, & moments that made my chest tighten.
The film is immaculately well-executed. From the eerie wide shots, to the tightening aspect ratio, it is hauntingly beautiful. Besides the technical aspects, the film succeeds as a serial killer police procedural, as well as a thrilling occult tale with genuine moments of terror.
Maika Monroe gives a precise & powerful performance as the film’s protagonist. But Nic Cage is worth the price of admission alone. I have been a fan/defender of Mr. Cage for many years, but I never thought I would be absolutely terrified of him. I hope the buzz surrounding his performance continues all the way through awards season.
Oz, your Dad would be proud.
