I'm so gutted to give this an okay rating because the first 30 minutes was an easy 5 for me and I felt like I was watching a modern Silence of the Lambs mixed with a bit of Zodiac, it genuinely could have been one of my favourite crime/horror movies and I was excited to hype it up in my review. Unfortunately the movie very quickly loses its way as (without spoilers) it devolves into nonsense that lost the grounded and gritty realism that made the first act so fucking good.
I can definitely see why the third act has got mixed opinions and I fall into the side that didn't like it, even though at this point it wasn't getting full marks it still had potential for a high rating until it quite quickly didn't. The ending especially is so underwhelming and unsatisfying especially after how strong the mystery was set up. Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage excel in their roles and elevate the movie but with how strong this started I've come away disappointed. Maybe a rewatch knowing what to expect will make it a better watch but I can't help but wonder "what could have been".
