Nicolas Cage, Ranked
"Oh! There she is!"
Monumental, albeit slightly overhyped.
I was on pins and needles for the entire duration of Longlegs. I am mostly unfamiliar with Oz Perkins' other films (although my ex's favorite film was his Gretel & Hansel, which in retrospect was probably a massive red flag), but will definitely be checking out his other works. Longlegs is the gold standard for the modern serial killer genre, up there with Fincher's Zodiac and Villeneuve's Prisoners.
The cinematography is so unnerving. I was scanning the background during every scene for hidden scares until I realized that Perkins wants you to do just that: look for scares that aren't necessarily even there. There's one scene in the film where I would have bet money that a dark figure would appear in a doorway behind Maika Monroe. It never happened, and I felt slightly let down, but that's precicely how paranoid Oz Perkins wants you to be during — and after — the film.
And yes, Nicolas Cage gives the performance of a lifetime. Longlegs isn't the best Cage film, but it may be his best work. He's beyond scary.
I am so proud of him. What an evil film.
