Longlegs leaves a stain in your mind, and try as hard as you can you won’t soon forget it.
I have been hype for this movie since the very first teaser, then the scary cool marketing kicked into gear and I was more on board than I already was. Admittedly I was a little worried that it wouldn’t live up to the hype for me. I’m very happy to report that I knew this was my jam from the beginning.
Oz Perkins is able to tap into that unnerving and disturbing fear uncommon in most stereotypical horror. Just the sheer sense of dread and uncomfortableness is felt from the cold open. Even the way it’s shot lends itself to the almost overwhelming discomfort. With eerie imagery showing us just enough that we want to look closer, and turn away at the same time. This movie balances the supernatural along with the real world horror that is the day to day life of an FBI agent. With a magnetic performance from Maika Monroe is clearly channeling Jodie Foster’s Clarice. Still she makes this role her own and truly cements herself as a modern Scream Queen that I love to root for every time. Then there’s Nic Cage, delivering a sometimes hilarious and all the times magnetic performance as the titular Longlegs. I genuinely can’t see anyone else in this role.
The standout is without a doubt Alicia Witt, who comes in and delivers a surprisingly devastating performance in the final act that stuck with me.
As a huge fan of Zodiac (I fucking love Zodiac) and Silence of the Lambs I enjoyed every part of this murder mystery, and I think fans of those will too. Perkins clearly had a stylish vision when writing and directing this, and even if it isn’t “the most horrifying movie” that doesn’t mean I won’t be having nightmares.
