Oz Perkins delivers a brooding, bleak tale of a serial killer. If you enjoyed the tense and muted style of The Blackcoat’s Daughter, you’re in for a treat. Dark red blood drips on snow and children shriek. A ride reminiscent of David Fincher’s Se7en, down, down into the sickening blackness of evil.
Clearly it’s a more commercially-focused film for Perkins, since it takes a familiar approach as some very famous crime/horror movies of the 90s, but it was a cool riff on those ideas, with some weirdo wtf Italian supernatural horror elements mixed in.
The Blackcoat’s Daughter is my favorite work from Perkins. The pace of that movie is very very slow, so I can see how it wouldn’t be the crowdpleaser that this film will probably be.
A real contender for the best horror film of the year emerges.
