Film enthusiast. I say hella a lot.
A clever dissection of religion, faith, and hypocrisy. It’s an extremely dialogue heavy film with uncomfortable moments of conversation. Having been raised without religion and remaining non-religious to this day, I still found these characters’ discussions around religion particularly interesting. It even felt like a non-preachy historical lesson, which I enjoyed.
Hugh Grant gives an immensely salty and sinister performance as Mr. Reed. He is absolutely fantastic in the role and it’s fun to watch his kind eyes and smile…
An absolutely batshit little indie that somehow found its way into a wide release. It’s a truly wild film that is everything I wanted and then some.
Demi Moore is exceptional in the role as Elizabeth Sparkle. Her performance is brave and all-around brilliant… capturing the hurt, jealousy, regret, and shame of an aging celebrity. The Oscars would never but it’s a performance worthy of a nomination. I also think we’re in for a helluva filmography from Margaret Qualley. She…
Structurally, the film reminded me of Woman of the Hour, with its predominant story set in a specific year and scattered with vignettes of murders from the years prior. This approach is an interesting angle and kept me engaged throughout.
It’s essentially a remixed Boy Who Cried Wolf, set against the backdrop of a serial killer stalking a 15yr old girl. The stalking sequences are taut and stylishly filmed, building up to an intense Halloween night finale. These sequences are…
I’m confused. You’re confused. We’re all confused.
A narratively incoherent storyline that made *some* sense by the finale but also, not much? There’s a lot of messy subplots that never really go anywhere or have any closure(s). I read about the production challenges and okay, it makes sense that some aspects are unfinished. But, why even include these incomplete plots in the film? IDK, this movie is edited like a total nightmare.
At least she’s pretty! The cinematography is absolutely…
Haha I feel swindled. What I thought was going to be a lowkey supernatural horror was ACTUALLY some right-wing propaganda spewing that demons are in fact real and so is God. Also, all encounters with some type of evil are apparently enough reason to convert any atheist. Believe!
In all seriousness, the setup is actually sufficient and intriguing. There’s a confidence in the filmmakers’ approach that’s commendable. However, all credibility is thrown out the window when instead of maybe commenting…
Lionsgate dropped this low-key Halloween horror film in the middle of July instead of October. A shame because this could’ve provided the perfect autumnal viewing to set the stage for spooky season.
This was surprisingly good. I didn’t have any expectations but I was constantly enthralled by its gothic style and creepy visuals. The home was a whole vibe: it’s dark, old, aesthetically uninviting, there’s a dank basement, a pumpkin garden, sketchy owners, and an entity within the walls. Such…
