andy’s review published on Letterboxd:
a satanic game of cat and mouse played right under the nose of a heavily tormented maika monroe who delivers (maybe?) a career best. She plays FBI agent, Lee Harker, who has a harrowing past that won’t seem to let go of her, that past bleeds into her home and work life causing her so much distress. Her breathing which is heard throughout the film really adds to the anxiety this film gives. I don’t remember feeling this uneasy in a theater in a long time.
Nic cage is the goat. While i think slightly underused as the face of this movie’s villain. His horrifying character design, the lore given to us by the FBI of the heinous acts his character long legs takes part in, combined with his disturbed onscreen minutes and chilling performance as devil worshipping doll maker are enough to carry him into horror movie history forever.
It’s got influence from all over, Se7en (cat & mouse killer), True detective (satanic devil worshipping killings), Zodiac (ledger, coded messaging), and Hereditary (supernatural, mothers). These combined elements make for a great horror movie. I’m not even a true fan of horror, but this was more thriller and suspense rather than gore and chaotic. There are some minor jump scares for those who aren’t a fan.
My theater there was not an empty seat. That just shows people don’t care what kind of movie they are seeing as long as it’s good. Other random thought i couldn’t find a place for in the review, the Harker & Carter duo is so good, they absolutely operate.
