I sat with it a bit on the drive home and I do think it could’ve been more cohesive in terms of character and themes, but ultimately I was pretty impressed by just how scary this thing was. It cemented itself in the Jacksoncore genre just by being a crime film about an obsessed detective with some vague but palpable supernatural horror (Cure, Exorcist III), and it’s also very well directed and has good understanding of horror atmosphere. So many great scares and creepy images will stay with me, as will Cage’s masterful performance. It does what a lot of the best thrillers do in that they implicate the main character and, by extension, the audience, in wanting to see the final piece to the puzzle no matter how horrifying it is. And just like Se7en or the original The Vanishing, the more horrible the payoff, the more we want to see it.
