The Metrotrain is an uncontrollable street car featured in Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online.
Description[]
Grand Theft Auto V and Online[]
The player can access the train at any station it stops at in both GTA V and GTA Online. In GTA V, the doors remain closed while the train is moving, after which the player will be forced into a cinematic view, while in GTA Online, the doors are permanently open, allowing the player to access it even if it forced to a stop. The player can also freely walk around the vehicle in GTA Online. Unlike the Cablecar, rides cannot be skipped on the Metrotrain.
Unlike the Tram in GTA San Andreas, the Metrotrain will stop if the player or an NPC blocks it, and will only continue moving once no longer blocked, or if the train driver is threatened with a weapon.
The Metrotrain's HUD name is "Freight Train"[1], but as the player is not able to control the vehicle, this name is never displayed in-game; this also applies to all rolling stock in GTA V, with the exception of the Freight Train itself (which can be controlled during Derailed.) The vehicle's model name is "metrotrain
", but also has an unused "Metropolitan" HUD name (see Trivia).
Design[]
Grand Theft Auto V and Online[]
The vehicle appears to be based on the Siemens P2000 used on the LA Metro C Line.
The Metrotrain is depicted with a relatively short chassis, using twin-axle bogies. The front end features a black section with circular headlights (inner main units and outer, smaller indicators), a curved windshield and a bright destination box reading "LOS SANTOS". The sides have black mirrors for the operator, two access doors each and various marker lights, while the roof area mounts a pantograph and what seems to be the air conditioning unit on the rear half. The rear section features a black connector, where it is normally connected with a second car facing the opposite direction.
The interior of the vehicle features an unusable access door that leads to the operator's cabin, having a single seat on the left-hand side and a wide control panel (which uses the same textures as most industrial trucks). The passenger compartment of the vehicle features eight large bench seats, which the protagonists may automatically use when on board (as there is no actual command to use the seats). NPCs can also spawn inside the cars.
It sports a white and red livery and is operated by Los Santos Transit. The vehicle also equips two horns; its standard cop airhorn, most notably played when entering and exiting tunnels, approaching rail crossings or when in the distance as ambience, and a quieter Freight Train horn, often played when the player stands directly in front of the train.
Performance[]
Grand Theft Auto V and Online[]
Like the Freight Train, the Metrotrain cannot be destroyed. The train will stop for vehicles and pedestrians blocking the way, but should the train driver be threatened, the train can easily push them, or vehicles, out of the way without difficulty.
The Tram has its own handling line, which is identical to the Freight Train and its train cars.

Trivia[]
Grand Theft Auto V and Online[]
- There is an unused text label that refers to the vehicle as "Metropolitan", pairing up to its model name and handling line.[2] In the final game, the vehicle uses the "Freight Train" text label, but as the player cannot drive the vehicle in-game without the use of trainers or mods, the display name is never seen.
Grand Theft Auto Online[]
- In Grand Theft Auto Online, if the player destroys a personal vehicle by hitting the side of the tram at high speed, the player will not be charged for the vehicle.
Oversights[]
Grand Theft Auto V and Online[]
- It is possible to ragdoll into the driver's cabin through the front window, and move around until the Tram leaves the station. The player will be teleported to the passengers section once the Tram is in motion.
- It was possible to destroy the Tram in Grand Theft Auto Online with the use of explosives. However, this has been patched.
- In GTA Online, there were rare cases where the Tram would spawn with only a single car, exposing the open back with no textures (as there are only textures on the inner side). This glitch was later patched.
- If the driver is shot with a Stun Gun, he will fall out of the driver's cabin. On some occasions, he will hit one of the seats and be shown as sitting before dying.
