The Mammoth[1][2] F-160 Raiju is a military VTOL attack jet featured in Grand Theft Auto Online as part of the San Andreas Mercenaries update.
Influence[]
Grand Theft Auto Online[]
The design of the F-160 Raiju is reminiscent of stealth fighters from the Joint Strike Fighter and Advanced Tactical Fighter programs of the USAF. Most of the aircraft, that being the nose, cockpit, intakes, and fuselage, is based on the Lockheed-Martin F-35A Lightning II with the STOVL LiftSystem from the F-35B. Mated to this are wings and a Pelikan tail design reminiscent of the Sukhoi Su-75 Checkmate and the Northrop YF-23. Some design elements found on the Raiju may have been inspired by several design submissions for the JSF and ATF programs.
The plane is provided with similar equipment to the F-35 Lightning II, such as the AN/AAQ-40 EOTS (Electro-Optical Target System) below the nose, radar reflectors on the wings, and the GAU-22/A 4-barrel gatling guns.
The "Glitch'd" livery is based on the digital camo of the Sukhoi Su-57 Felon.
Design[]
Grand Theft Auto Online[]
The F-160 features a forward-pivot canopy providing access for the pilot, and an hexagonal sighting device below the nose. Green lights found on the sides of the aircraft light up only when the plane is not in stealth mode. The tail of the F-160 lacks horizontal stabilizers in favor of a delta wing with outer ailerons and inner elevators. Between the vertical stabilizers is a single mid-mounted jet engine which is capable of redirecting its thrust downward/ Numerous compartments open when the jet transitions to hover mode, including the LiftFan behind the cockpit and the thrust blades on the back to allow the jet nozzle pivot downwards. The underside also house the main landing undercarriage. The aircraft bears US Marines markings beneath the wings as well as "VGA-025" markings.
In addition of the indicators used on the P-996 LAZER and most fighter jets, various flight data info screens and weapon systems are displayed on the flight panel inside, unique to this vehicle.
The majority of the fuselage is painted with the primary color, while the small protruding details above and below the aircraft (intended to be radar reflectors) are painted with the secondary color. It uses a set of unique industrial wheels.
The aircraft is equipped with two built-in machine guns with explosive rounds located above each intake, as well as two missiles stowed within two openable bays underneath. Though unusable, two bombs can be seen as well.

Performance[]
Grand Theft Auto Online[]
Vehicle[]
Similar to the Hydra, the pilot can switch between vertical and horizontal flight by holding the left joystick on consoles, or holding G on keyboard on the PC.
When in horizontal flying mode, the Raiju is currently the fastest aircraft in the Enhanced and E&E versions of the game, beating the Pyro in top speed. Below 250 meters/820 feet, the jet can fly at 301.7 kph/187.5 mph. Above 250 meters/820 feet, it can go at 366 kph/227.5 mph. The acceleration is also the quickest of any aircraft, and only the LF-22 Starling and planes with JATO thrusters can out accelerate it. The jet’s handling is superior to most aircraft, as it can turn tightly at low speeds and has good rudder strength (18 degrees per second). It can fly directly up without losing speed, unlike the Hydra.
When in vertical mode, it is able to pitch and roll much further than the Hydra, and can hover upside down by leaning to the side while descending, though will gradually lose altitude. The aircraft moves very slowly when flying in this mode. When switching from horizontal mode at full speed, the jet will take about two or three seconds to slow down.
The Raiju is slightly smaller than the Hydra, with its wheels also being closer together. This makes it possible to land in smaller spaces or areas with a small surface area, such as the top of the Kosatka.
The aircraft is powered by a single turbofan engine with an afterburner, sharing the engine sound with most fighter jets.
Defense[]
The F-160 Raiju can take as much damage as other aircraft introduced in the Smuggler's Run update, requiring three homing missiles/Heavy Sniper Mk II explosive rounds, two Railgun rounds or a single RPG to destroy the jet.
Similar to the Akula and the Annihilator Stealth, the most notable feature of the vehicle is its stealth mode, which allows the pilot to navigate around the map without being spotted by enemy radars, making it useful for surprise attacks, bounty evasions, and getaways. Enabling stealth mode also reduces the pilot's wanted level to 2 stars if the pilot has 3 or more stars. However, its weapons are disabled for the pilot during the stealth mode. In addition, cloaking the Raiju does not protect it from a Galaxy Super Yacht's defense system, the Weazel News TV spectator channel or being spotted by the Orbital Cannon surveillance system. Also, most homing weapons are still able to lock onto it. Combined with the lack of countermeasures, the pilot must be careful or skillful enough to dodge enemy missiles.
When stealth mode is enabled, it will hide the aircraft from the minimap along with all items carried by the occupants. These include:
- Biker Business Supplies, Gunrunning Supplies, Special Cargo, Air Freight Cargo, Heist Prep Equipment.
- Dead Drop and Hot Property briefcase/package.
- Hostile Takeover briefcase.
Weaponry[]
- Explosive MG: The aircraft is equipped with a set of dual explosive cannons, which behave similar to those from the Rogue and the B-11 Strikeforce, having a slower firing rate compared to the P-996 LAZER and the Hydra (240 rounds per minute versus the jets' fire rate of 900 rounds per minute prior to their nerf, fired from each machine gun), decreased damage (50% damage of a homing missile), and reduced explosive splash radius (two meters compared to the jets’ blast radius of five meters prior to their nerf), though with slightly increased range (200 meters compared to the jets' range of 180 meters). This makes the guns a poor choice for air-to-ground engagements, as the reduced splash radius makes it difficult for the pilot to take out targets on foot, combined with the movement of the jet. However, they can still destroy unarmored vehicles in a single shot and can cause severe damage against other aircraft, especially in hover mode. It should be noted that the Raiju's MGs are not centered, but they shoot slightly upwards (best seen when in First-Person view).
- Missiles: The Raiju is equipped with two missile launchers, which can be fired in either homing or non-homing mode. These missiles cannot be fired continuously, similar to the P-996 LAZER, Hydra and Buzzard Attack Chopper, since they have a short "reload" time after firing two missiles in quick succession. Their tracking capabilities are somewhat on par with most weaponized aircraft, and have a 300 meter/984 foot lock-on range. They can also fly for five seconds before detonating and can travel 540 meters/1772 feet.

Trivia[]
General[]
- The aircraft is named after the raijū (雷獣), a legendary creature in Japanese mythology. It is also known as the "thunder beast", a reference to the F-35 Lightning.
- The numbers "404" can be seen on the right side near the front of the aircraft. The number "404" is often associated with error 404 and may be a reference to the fact the jet can cease to exist by entering stealth mode.
Oversights[]
Grand Theft Auto Online[]
- The VTOL mode can be activated and used while flying upside down. The same applies to the Hydra.
- Enabling VTOL will create an elongated collision at the rear of the aircraft above the exhaust.
- The Raiju has several bugs that make it unusually resistant:
- It is nearly immune to firearms, except some weapons such as the Heavy Revolver.
- This high bullet resistance was fixed with The Chop Shop update, though destroying the plane with a player inside will not count as a kill by the attacker, and will instead count as if the plane was naturally destroyed.
- It can survive crashing into the ground without blowing up when exiting the vehicle in mid-air, though it will be destroyed when it crashes into water.
- The jet doesn't seem to eventually shut down when it has taken enough damage, though the engine will keep struggling to ignite.
- It is nearly immune to firearms, except some weapons such as the Heavy Revolver.
- When seen by anyone's perspective, the Explosive MGs are not visually being fired by the pilot; they lack the muzzle flash, firing sounds and bullet tracer effects.
- This has been fixed in the Bottom Dollar Bounties update.
- With The Chop Shop update, the Raiju no longer makes a sound to other players in close proximity to it.
- This has been fixed in a subsequent hotfix.
