No no. It's just really nice to be part of the community like this. Ever since your father and I came here from Bangkok, it's been a challenge fitting in. I've always thought making it into this parade would mean we had finally done it.
—Mrs. Boonchuy, "Froggy Little Christmas"

Mrs. Boonchuy (อุม บุญช่วย; Thai nickname Oum)[1] is a supporting character of Amphibia. She is Mr. Boonchuy's wife and Anne Boonchuy's biological mother.

Appearance[]

Body[]

She bears a similarity quite similar to Anne but has light wrinkles at the side of her eyes, and unlike Anne, her hair was tied into a ponytail at the back when she was younger. When Anne was a child, her mother didn't have wrinkles yet and looked even more identical to her daughter likely when still in her youth. She's shorter than her husband and taller than her daughter in the family.

Clothing[]

During a flashback in "Lost in Newtopia", she wears a blue jacket over a white shirt and brown pants.

In Season 3, her hair isn't tied up, she's wearing a purple-blue sweater, a pair of light color jeans, a pair of greenish-yellow earrings, and seems to be barefoot at home while seemingly wearing a pair of pink crocs when out of the house. She's taller than her own daughter, though shorter than her husband. She has a golden wedding ring on her left ring finger.

During the episodes "Thai Feud" and "Mr. X", Mrs. Boonchuy wears a green apron and a red bandana.

During the episode "Froggy Little Christmas", Mrs. Boonchuy wears a magenta robe, violet and white pajamas, teddy bear slippers, and a Santa costume.

Personality[]

Mrs. Boonchuy is a strict and austere woman who expects her daughter to grow successful in school. Despite this, she loves her family, including Anne, with abundant love. In "Anne-sterminator", she became more supportive and less strict than before after realizing how much she pressures her daughter when she confronts her for keeping the truth of Andrias' invasion as a secret.

Inspired by her daughter's heroism, she and her husband became more courageous and heroic as hers, as they manage to keep Mr. X and his agents away from Anne and the Plantars. She also believed in Anne as she motivates her not to give up instead of listening to Mr. X's taunts while she and their Earth allies are on their way to save the Plantars from the FBI. During the Frog-vasion, she and her husband are helping Anne and the others fighting against King Andrias and manage to convince Mr. X to turn over a new leaf.

Background[]

Early life[]

Not much is known about her past, except that she was born and raised in Bangkok, Thailand to her mother and an unknown man. In her adult years, she fell in love with her future husband. Later, they had a daughter, Anne. One day, she and her husband immigrated to Los Angeles, California, USA and opened their restaurant Thai Go near their house. When Anne was five, Mrs. Boonchuy took her to a Thai School to learn martial arts and the Thai language which Anne is well at in the former but as for the latter she could barely form even a sentence. At some point, she took her daughter to Bangkok but didn't let her explore the outside while driving, showing that Anne has assimilated into American culture a bit.

Later life[]

As Anne was becoming a teenager, Mrs. Boonchuy grew strict, wanting her daughter to have good grades in middle school but her daughter slacked off in doing so and changed the grades of the report card so that she and her husband would not eventually notice. On Anne's 13th birthday, she prepares a party for Anne at home but her daughter never arrives.

Reuniting with her daughter[]

About five months after her daughter's disappearance, while baking something in the kitchen with deep sadness, Mrs. Boonchuy hears a knock on the door, which to her sheer happiness is her daughter Anne, who had been gone for five months. Though she and her husband reunite with her tearfully, the moment is ruined when the Plantars, who misinterpreted a bird call as Anne's signal, reveal themselves, shocking her and her husband. Afterwards, she listens to Anne's presentation about where she had been all that time, and while she was surprised by everything Anne had gone through, she was unsure about letting the Plantars stay with them, even suggesting that the authorities take care of them before seeing how much they mean to Anne and allowing them to stay, albeit on lockdown.

Despite being extremely happy to have Anne back, Mrs. Boonchuy ends up smothering her with her presence while on lockdown, such as combing her hair while she slept or appearing in the bathroom with her to give her a toothbrush, which drives Anne to demand that she and her husband give her some space. When Anne suggests she and the Plantars join them at the market, Mrs. Boonchuy is initially hesitant, as Anne had never wanted to go the market before, but after Hop Pop explained how much she had grown, she accepts, but advises they stick together and if anything happens, she and the Plantars go back on lockdown.

At the market, she does end up letting Anne take the Plantars to a noodle shop while she gets herself some tea, and was completely unaware of Anne and Plantar's fight with Cloak-Bot, after which she commends Anne for her maturity and agrees to back off with the attention.

Life with new guests[]

Though initially hesitant, Mrs. Boonchuy slowly but steadily accepted the Plantars as her house guests, and from time-to-time, would offer advice to her daughter on how to help them adapt to their new surroundings. Things would start to strain, however, between her and Sprig, as he wanted to be a part of the Boonchuy family despite her personal wishes. One day at the restaurant, when Sprig learned that one of her customers, Ned, had opened up a Thai-themed food truck due to his own love of her restaurant, yet his placement of the truck started to hurt the business, he decided to get rid of the truck in hopes it would make her see him in a different light. His first attempt to do so ended in failure as he ended up making a scene, yet due to her views on guests, she punishes Anne for Sprig's behavior and doubles her chores instead.

After the restaurant closed for the night, she learns that Sprig once again disobeyed her wishes by luring Ned out of his truck with a fake note and watches him and Anne accidently drive off with the truck. She and Ned catch up to them but Sprig takes full responsibility for what happened and apologizes for not respecting her boundaries. Mrs. Boonchuy, in turn, apologizes for making him feel like such an outsider, and would give a remorseful Ned a job as a delivery man to compensate for not working with him. She does ultimately scold and berate Sprig for his recklessness, which makes him think she sees him as family now, and he hugs her while she starts reconsidering her decision. Later, Anne told her that Sprig doesn't have a mom and that his parents got eaten by giant Herons, the next morning, Mrs. B made Sprig pancakes with cockroaches she captured.

Mrs. Boonchuy later took Anne to the dentist since Anne had been missing for five months and has a feeling she hasn't been brushing. Upon arriving at the dentist, Anne had eight cavities and a whole lot of cricket legs between her teeth. After returning home, she and her husband ask the Plantars to look after Anne for them.

Mrs. Boonchuy later took Anne and the Plantars to the museum to learn some history while she was cleaning up the house. She then checks on them while they were in Anne's room who claim they were working on a report though she didn't believe them.

The next day, Mrs. Boonchuy, her husband, Anne, and the Plantars head to the Thai Community where everyone was eager to see Anne again. Though she was aware that Anne was trying to go see Dr. Jan, she told Anne she can stay for an hour. However, when she caught Anne sneaking away, she was upset at first, but then revealed she was returning some dishes from the people who helped her and her husband when Anne was missing. Suddenly, a swarm of Dragonfly Drones sent by Cloak-Bot show up. Anne claims they were from her school who wanted to get more pictures of her. Though Anne told her and everyone to get to safety, they join in and help destroy them all.

After cleaning up the remains of the Drones, Mrs. Boonchuy believed middle school equipment has become more advanced these days. Knowing that Anne still wants to go see Dr. Jan, she allows Anne, but Anne and the Plantars decided to stay for a little while until Dr. Jan shows up.

Learning the truth and laying low[]

Anne-sterminator 29

Mrs. Boonchuy and her husband confront Anne.

One day, Mrs. Boonchuy, her husband and the Plantars were watching Fumigator 4 while Anne was doing chores which impressed everyone. She and her husband were proud of how much Anne has changed and being responsible and honest with them since she returned. As they hug, Anne went into the kitchen to go get coffee ice cream with Sprig (in reality, Anne was using it as an excuse to tell him that she can't hide the truth about the invasion anymore). As Anne was fixing to tell them, Cloak-Bot showed up having tracked both Anne and the Plantars since Frobo was made of Amphibia technology. They went into her workout room, which turned out be full of Anne dummies that she made when she thought Anne ran away, as they argue, Cloak-Bot burst through the floor, then got confused by the number of Anne dummies.

Mr. and Mrs. Boonchuy were surprised that the robot was after their daughter, it hit one of the dummies and attacks it outside. Mrs. Boonchuy, her husband, Anne, and the Plantars took off in the family van while the robot was distracted. However, the robot started chasing after them on the highway. Mrs. Boonchuy asked Anne why a robot was chasing after them. Anne doesn't go in full detail, she says King Andrias is out to get them with Sprig telling them Anne punched the King in the face, much to their surprise. As they continued driving, Hop Pop accidentally revealed that Cloak-Bot had attacked Anne and the Plantars more than once, then it jumps right in front of them while driving on the bridge, but her husband drove over it.

They arrived at a junkyard to hide from the robot, they ran out of the van and hid from it. While hiding, Mrs. B and her husband learned that Anne hasn't told them the whole story, so they confront her and demanded to know what was going on. Mrs. B asked her daughter why the robot was chasing them and if there was something she wanted to tell them. Though her husband wanted to hear her out, Mrs. B tells him that Anne is lying and did something to anger the King and believes the King sent the robot after her as retribution. Anne attempts to defend her actions, but Mrs. B believes Anne hasn't changed and is still the same irresponsible little girl that used to cut class and then begins putting so much pressure on her.

Anne then tells them the truth and she only lied to protect them and the Plantars, even begs for her help. Though reluctant, Mrs. B agrees to help and then made more Anne dummies to distract Cloak-Bot while her husband, Anne, and the Plantars attack it. After the robot blew her husband and the Plantars away, the robot was getting ready to kill Anne, but Mrs. B rescued her daughter by bashing it into pieces with a hammer. However, Cloak-Bot was about to self-destruct until Anne taps into her Calamity Powers, sending it flying into orbit where it finally exploded. Surprised by what she and her husband had just witnessed, Anne passes out before she tells them everything.

Mrs. Boonchuy with Anne sleeping on her shoulder.

After destroying Cloak-Bot, Mrs. B, her husband, Anne, and the Plantars headed home while she sat in the back seat with her unconscious daughter and the Plantars. Mrs. B understood that Anne was only protecting her, her husband, and the Plantars and promises to help the Plantars get home as she embraces them. Unaware to Mrs. B, her husband, and the Plantars, the FBI has recovered traffic cam footage of Cloak-Bot attacking them and decides to call in Mr. X.

Now aware of the danger that Anne and the Plantars are facing, Mrs. B and her husband secretly put a tracking device on Hop Pop while he was asleep in case Anne and the Plantars are in in danger. While at Thai Go, Mrs. B and her husband are talking about how they took on the robot and are ready for more. Though Anne tells them hopefully nothing unless Andrias sends another, they are safe for now. While Anne took the Plantars to the movies, Mr. X shows up at Thai Go and the two greet each other in Thai, while Mr. X was taking his order, he took out a picture of the Plantars and asks if she saw any odd creatures disguised as humans. Mrs. B got nervous when she discovers that Mr. X is a government agent working for the FBI, as she calls out her husband to bring out Mr. X's order, Jenny, Mr. X's assistant shows up at the door with a laptop, informing Mr. X that Anne and the Plantars have been sighted.

Mrs. B and her husband witness him run out the door with a stun gun with the intentions of capturing both Anne and the Plantars. She and her husband then ran to their van to go stop them, she then tried to call Anne to warn her, but Anne couldn't hear because the movie was too loud. She managed to drive right in front of Mr. X, only for Mr. X to extend the wheels of his van to drive over them. Mrs. Boonchuy was able to text Anne and warn her and the Plantars about Mr. X, Anne then calls her and her husband and tells them the exit is being watched, though Anne refused her and her husband's help, Mrs. B asked her husband to tell Anne that they are adults, and they know what they're doing. Her husband attempted to put his phone on speaker only to accidentally call Mrs. B's mother instead.

As she and her husband arrived at the theater, they see Jenny guarding the doors and scanning every guest to see if they were aliens in disguise or not. Wondering how to save them, her husband had an idea, so they drove to the pet shop. After dropping her husband off at the pet shop, Mrs. B distracted some FBI agents with a magic trick by pulling Domino out of a hat. Mrs. B and her husband return to the theater to explain their plan to Anne only for Anne to tell them they can handle Mr. X. They then see FBI agents arrive to capture Anne and the Plantars. Using the tracking device they put on Hop Pop, they realized Anne and the Plantars are in one of the bathrooms. She asks her husband if he was ready, his response: "Born ready!" They then took out tools, fool with the power box, cut the power off inside, allowing them to rescue Anne and the Plantars, leaving behind real frogs which made Mr. X a laughingstock in front of his colleagues.

After rescuing Anne and the Plantars, Mrs. B and her husband explain on how they came up with their plan to save them from Mr. X. Anne admits she misjudged them and they forgive her, only for Anne to ask them, how did they know which bathroom they were in. They then admit they put a tracking device on Hop Pop while he was sleeping, which Polly rips off and Hop Pop screams in pain.

Following their encounter with Mr. X, Mrs. B, her husband, Anne, and the Plantars needed to keep a low profile from him and the FBI.

When Hop Pop starred in a new commercial, Mrs. B asked if they were living with somebody famous while her husband asked if they should be charging for rent. Anne reminds them that Mr. X might see the commercial, but Mrs. B's husband told Anne that he's a federal business employee and has other things to do than watch T.V.

One day, Mrs. B noticed that the Plantars were flooding their backyard because Anne made them a homemade swamp to help them get over their homesickness, but they weren't happy. Then Anne tells her she baked them cookies which are "The answers to life's problems." Annoyed, Mrs. B told Anne that she needs to stop giving the Plantars things just because she feels bad, and they need to learn to coop on their own. As Anne goes outside, she takes one of the cookies and takes a bite and asks her how she made them crunchy, only to reveal they're made of cicadas. As her husband shows up, she accidentally spits in his face because the cookies were made out of bugs.

One day, Mrs. B was decorating the house for Christmas and then she got a call about joining the Christmas-Palooza Parade, but Mrs. B declined since they need to keep a low profile from both King Andrias and Mr. X. Unaware to her and her husband, Anne secretly called them back to join the parade, then Anne and the Plantars went to go build a Thai Go float with the help of the Thai Community, Ally and Jess. The next morning on Christmas Eve, Mrs. B and her husband were surprised to see the Thai Go float that Anne, the Plantars, and the IT Gals made. That night while joining the parade, Mrs. B reveals to Anne the parade is a welcoming to the community and was having a great time.

Just as her husband was getting ready to take a picture of her, the Plantars, and Anne, the giant Santa float in front of them turns its head and said Anne's name out loud. To Anne and the Plantars' surprise, it was King Andrias who sent a Dragonfly Drone to eliminate Anne and taking control of the Santa float and chased them across the city. Mrs. B, her husband, Anne, and the Plantars attempt to fight back by throwing stuff from their float, but the drone destroys them though the cookie prop had an effect. They come across a dead end where the drone was getting ready to destroy them until they fire the tree from their float and finally destroy it. They then return home and had a blast, before heading inside, Mrs. B reveals to the Plantars the true meaning of Christmas is about spending time with family and loved ones.

They then head inside to enjoy cookies, the next day on Christmas morning, Anne gave her the butterfly pin which she loves.

Getting the Plantars home[]

One day, Mrs. Boonchuy, her husband, Anne and the Plantars meet Dr. Jan and Terri at a warehouse where the latter two have built a portal to take the Plantars home. Terri managed to get the portal working, but only made a portal too small to use. In order to get the portal working, Terri said they needed a lot of generators, and Mrs. Boonchuy realizes the only place they can get that is SpendCo. However, unaware to Mrs. B, her husband, Anne, and the Plantars, Mr. X tracked the Plantars at SpendCo using one of the security cameras.

The final battle[]

Relationships[]

Mr. Boonchuy[]

Mr. Boonchuy is Mrs. Boonchuy's husband, whom she loves dearly.

Anne Boonchuy[]

Anne is Mrs. Boonchuy's daughter, who despite being very strict with her and arguing with her over her laziness and immaturity, she loves her dearly, as shown when she tearfully hugged her after she came home following her five months in Amphibia.

As revealed in "Anne-sterminator," Mrs. Boonchuy has held high expectations for Anne, which manifested in crafting various mannequins of Anne with successful careers, calling her way of coping with her disappearance. In the same episode, she gets angry at Anne for not telling her the full story of her time in Amphibia when they were attacked by King Andrias' Cloak-Bot, and the lack of context from the Plantars made her believe she hadn't truly grown up at all during her time there. She is surprised when Anne reveals how pressured she feels trying to live up to their expectations, and after Cloak-Bot is destroyed, Mrs. Boonchuy comes to understand the reason for Anne's secrecy, and they return home on good terms.

Following the battle with Cloak-Bot, Mrs. Boonchuy becomes very supportive over her daughter's fight against King Andrias, as shown in "Froggy Little Christmas," when she declined the offer to have a Thai Go float for the Christmas parade to protect Anne and the Plantars from King Andrias. She was, however, deeply touched by Anne building her a float for her anyway. On Christmas Day, Anne gifted her with the butterfly she received in Newtopia, which brought her to tears.

Sprig Plantar[]

Mrs. Boonchuy first meets Sprig after Anne returns home with the Plantars after her five months in Amphibia. Though she was surprised by the existence of another world with talking frogs, she and her husband ended up welcoming them into their home after seeing how much they mean to Anne, and also out of gratitude for them taking her in their world.

In "Thai Feud", Mrs. Boonchuy starts becoming annoyed by Sprig when he starts treating himself as a part of the family when Mrs. Boonchuy only saw him and his family as their guests. This insistent treating of him as an outsider ultimately drove Sprig to desperately move Ned's food truck away from the restaurant, and after hearing him apologize, she would apologize herself and later scold him for his reckless actions, which according to Anne, signifies that Mrs. Boonchuy sees him as family. Later, after learning that Sprig and Polly lost their parents from giant herons, she started to feel sorry for him.

Hop Pop Plantar[]

Like with Sprig, Mrs. Boonchuy was surprised to see talking frogs, but she welcomed him and his grandchildren into her home because of Anne's care for them. Though she doesn't interact with him much, she is deeply grateful for giving Anne a place to stay in Amphibia, while Hop Pop tries not to treat himself as anything more than a guest.

Polly Plantar[]

Like with the rest of the Plantars, Mrs. Boonchuy was surprised to see her and her family, but she welcomed her and her family into her home because of Anne's care for them. Also like with Hop Pop, she doesn't interact with Polly as much, but she is deeply grateful to her for sheltering Anne, while Polly doesn't try to be anything more than a guest.

King Andrias[]

She hasn't met King Andrias in person, only encountering him indirectly both when Cloak-Bot attacked their home, and during his attack on her family during the Christmas Parade. Based on the information given to her by Anne and the Plantars, it can be assumed that Mrs. Boonchuy hates King Andrias for lying to Anne about sending her home, manipulating her and her friends into trusting him, and planning to invade Earth with an army of Frobots. She especially hates him for trying to kill her daughter, and she tries to support Anne in fighting back against him.

Behind the scenes[]

Name and basis[]

Although her name has never been revealed on or off-screen, Matt Braly revealed during an interview with The Geeky Waffle YouTube channel that Mrs. Boonchuy's Thai nickname is Oum. Matt also stated that Oum is the nickname of one of his aunts.[1]

Voice[]

Mrs. Boonchuy is voiced by On Braly, Matt Braly's mother. The fact of casting her was because they needed a bilingual English-Thai speaker which according to Braly was "surprisingly hard to come by".[2]

Debut[]

Initially with her voice heard in the first season episode, "Family Fishing Trip", Mrs. Boonchuy made her debut during a flashback in the second season episode, "Lost in Newtopia".

She makes her full-time appearance in the third season episode "The New Normal".
