"Newts in Tights" is the first segment of the fifteenth episode of the third season of Amphibia, and the one hundred and first episode overall.
It premiered on April 23, 2022, alongside "Fight or Flight".[1][2]
Synopsis
While on a recon mission, Anne and Sprig confront an old mentor.[2]
Plot
During a recon mission, Anne and Sprig witness a young newt pretending to be injured in order to distract some of Andrias' soldiers so a band of newts can attack their caravan and free its prisoners. As Anne considers recruiting them to the resistance, they're cornered by said newts and their leader, who turns out to be Tritonio Espada. Although Anne doesn't trust Tritonio because of his backstabbing ways, she still pitches her offer to him.
At the newts' camp, Tritonio explains that as a kid with no parents, he thought he could trust a group of kid thieves, only for them to backstab him once he outlived his usefulness. For this reason, he promised himself to never get attached to anyone.
During another caravan raid, Andrias' forces have robots disguise themselves as regular newts as to capture Tritonio's forces by surprise. Tritonia tries to live by No Honor Among Thieves. He utterly fails and saves his band, Anne and Sprig in the end. Tritonio clearly cares for his people, and comes back to rescue them in the end. That night, Anne, using Tritonio's skills, convinces him to join the resistance to take down Andrias. Tritonio then admits that Anne wasn’t the same girl he met all those months ago and adds of how much she’s changed and announces that he and his merry band agrees to join the Resistance to help take down Andrias.
When Anne and Sprig return to the base to inform Sasha of their success, and she leads them to a room Hop Pop found after getting lost looking for the bathroom. Seeing no doorknob and a book-shaped slot, Sprig deduces the book with the info on the Calamity Box is the key and sure enough, it is. Once the door opens, the group find a small room with familiar cloak and a letter with no writing on it. As they leave, Sprig takes the letter, with the implications that Leif wrote it and the book and that she was indeed a Plantar rising higher.

Trivia
- Viewership: This episode was watched by 0.30 viewers on its premiere.[5]
- Matt Braly considers this and "Fight or Flight" as Amphibia's last "fun" episodes, possibly referring to them being the last episodes to feature the theme song and the standard credits sequence.[6]
- This is the only episode where Anne, Sprig, and Hop Pop all appear without Polly and the last episode where she doesn't appear.
- Although, Anne also appears without any of the Plantars in "Sasha's Angels".
- This is the last of three episodes, following "Sasha's Angels" and "Mother of Olms", in which Sasha physically appears in the present time without Grime.
- This, along with "Fight or Flight", is the fifth episode following "Froggy Little Christmas," "All In," "The Hardest Thing", and "The Three Armies"/"The Beginning of the End" to have its score released.[7]
Revelations and significant events
- Some local Amphibia soldiers who are toads and newts have chosen to join King Andrias' faction.
- Anne has reclaimed and taken to using Tritonio's ancestral sword in combat.
- Tritonio has formed and led a group of thieves who call themselves the "Merry Band", who raid Andrias' forces caravans on the tracks.
- Tritonio reveals that as a child he was a homeless child with no family, in the streets of Newtopia, who ended up joining a street gang that abandoned him in a robbery, thus learning the "law of the streets": no loyalties, no attachments.
- Tritonio and the Merry Band join the Resistance near the end of the episode.
- At the end of the episode, Anne, Sprig, Hop Pop, and Sasha discover a secret room in the Plantar Farm basement, which belonged to a family member.
Continuity
- The events of "Combat Camp" are mentioned.
- Jerry, the street vendor Anne and Polly met in "Lost in Newtopia", is seen in Tritonio's flashback as the newt his gang attempted to rob.
Allusions
- Robin Hood - The episode contains many references to the folk hero: the episode title is a reference to the Mel Brooks film Robin Hood: Men in Tights. At one point, Tritonio fires three arrows from his bow, parodying the poster for Men in Tights, which, in turn, was a parody of the poster for the Kevin Costner-fronted Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Tritonio's new look and outlaw status are an homage to the character, and the Merry Band are a parody of the Merry Men.
- Jojo Rabbit - Jojo Potato's name is based on the titular character. Archie Yates, who plays Jojo Potato, also appeared in the film.
Errors
- Continuity errors:
- In "Combat Camp", Tritonio states that the sword he gave to Anne has been in his family for years. However, in this episode, he stated he had no family when he was young. This adds to the idea that he lied.
- The sky appears to be blue as it was the previous 2 seasons and in "Turning Point", not the polluted sky seen since "Commander Anne". It's possibly the sky is not as polluted every single day during the war.
