"Family Fishing Trip" is the first segment of the sixteenth episode of the first season of Amphibia, and the thirty-first episode overall.
It premiered on July 11, 2019 alongside "Bizarre Bazaar".[3]
Synopsis
Sprig wants to spend time with Hop Pop on their family fishing trip, but Hop Pop’s friend Sylvia gets in the way.[3]
Plot
The gang prepare to go on their annual fishing trip. Sprig has had fond memories of fishing with Hop Pop since he was a polliwog and is eager to continue their usual tradition. However, Sprig's perfect day is supposedly ruined when Hop Pop brings along Sylvia Sundew for the trip. Sprig is put off by her suddenly joining them, but Anne and Polly tell him that it will be okay. Nevertheless, Hop Pop begins spending more time with Sylvia over various activities and Sprig, overcome with jealousy, decides to break them up and get Sylvia to leave the trip. Meanwhile, Anne wants to try parasailing after watching hours of it online back home. She brings her own hang gliding gear and throughout the day, keeps trying and failing to stay airborne; crashing onto the boat numerous times to Polly's enjoyment.
Sprig attempts to sabotage many of the enjoyments on their trip, but they end up working in Sylvia's favor. This causes Sprig to become saddened and sing about his lament which is quietly noticed by Sylvia. As Anne and Polly try to convince Sprig to let it go, Sprig is approached by Sylvia to talk. When they pass by a small island full of pretty blue blossoms, Sprig duped Sylvia that she go pick the flowers for Hop Pop claiming that they are his favorite. Taking his words to heart, Sylvia jumps off the boat to swim over to the island while Sprig roles up the ladder to the boat. When he approaches Hop Pop, he is surprised to see his grandfather already prepared to go fishing with him. He then explains that Sylvia saw that he was sad and suggested that they spend time together. This causes Sprig to realize he has been selfish and finally admits that Sylvia is cool and how Hop Pop is lucky to have her.
Just as Sprig asks if they could turn around the boat so Sylvia can be retrieved from the island, Sylvia screams in terror when it is revealed that the island she is on is really the top of a crab. Hop Pop turns the boat around while Sprig uses Anne's hang glider (which annoys her as he turns out to be pretty good at using it without practicing). Sprig successfully rescues Sylvia while she furiously kicks the crab in the face, severely harming it. After landing, Sylvia presents Hop Pop some of the flowers she picked out, only for Hop Pop to reveal his favorite flowers are actually daffodils, thus exposing Sprig's lie. At this, Sprig confesses he was jealous of Sylvia, apologizes for his behavior around her, and tells her that he is happy Hop Pop is lucky to have someone like her around. As everyone settles to go fishing together, Polly takes over the hang glider (again, to better results than Anne) while Anne suggests going back to get the crab for its meat, as she got hungry upon seeing it, but no one responds to her suggestion.

Trivia
- In the Thai dub, Mrs. Boonchuy's line was dubbed by another person.
- In the Disney+ version of this episode, the hardcoded subtitles were replaced with the optional subtitles, as they're intended to be used as the international prints.
- The laptop Anne uses in the flashback looks quite similar to a HP laptop.
Revelations and significant events
- Hop Pop's favorite flower is the daffodil, something he claims everyone knows.
- Sprig is shown as a pollywog during a flashback and while he sings his song, revealing that he has had his hat since he was very young.
- Due to Sprig being a pollywog, Mr. and Ms. Plantar were still alive during this flashback.[5]
- It would later be revealed that it was given to him as a birthday present from his parents.[6]
- Considering her responses about the crab making her "scared and hungry", Anne loves to eat crab.
- Mrs. Boonchuy makes her speaking debut off-screen and is revealed to speak Thai.
Continuity
- Hop Pop's "pain peppers" from "Best Fronds" reappear.
- This is the third time Anne has a flashback to a moment on Earth.
Allusions
- How the Grinch Stole Christmas - Sprig's evil exaggerated smile is similar to the titular character's, particularly, the one he flashes in the 1966 animated Chuck Jones TV adaptation.
- YouTube - Anne is watching a parasailing video on a site similar to YouTube.
Errors
- In the Earth flashback where Anne is lounging on the family sofa, her socks are mismatched: one has a pink stripe while the other is the same plain white one she arrives with in Amphibia.
Edits
- During the Southeast Asia broadcast, the words "dang", "heck", and "son of a sea slug" were cut.
