"Commander Anne" is the first segment of the eleventh episode of the third season of Amphibia, and the ninety-third episode overall.
It premiered on March 26, 2022, alongside "Sprivy".
Synopsis
Anne is made leader of the Wartwood Resistance, even though she's not good at the job.[1]
Plot
Anne and the Plantars arrive back in Amphibia only to find that Wartwood has been attacked and nearly destroyed by King Andrias and his army, as well as some wildlife under mind control. As Anne and the Plantars are threatened by one of these creatures, mysterious figures come out and save them as well as the creature, removing the mind control device on its neck and reveal themselves to be some of the familiar residents of Wartwood, led by Sasha.
The Plantars' home serves as the entrance to the ancient family tunnels that have been turned into the rebel's secret hideout. Sasha informs them of Marcy being alive and kept prisoner by Andrias, whose army has taken over Amphibia and destroyed towns including Wartwood. The town's residents all moved into the tunnels as well and became The Resistance, all of whom rejoice once they see Anne and the Plantars have returned. Sprig, Polly, and Hop Pop, however, are having a hard time readjusting to their old home after being spoiled by the comforts of Earth.
Anne and Sasha briefly talk about the events at Newtopia Castle, where Sasha talks about how she has changed and her days of toxic manipulation are over. Anne accepts this and agrees to her and Sasha being on the same side for a change and promises they will deal with their emotional baggage when it's more convenient. We are then introduced to the helmet of authority that Sasha is wearing, who then bequeaths it upon Anne since the hopes that she would return is what kept the town going this whole time. Anne is quite uncertain about this due to how much has changed since the last time she was in Amphibia, but Sasha rallies support from the rest of the resistance to anoint Anne as the new leader. After Sasha briefs Anne and the Plantars about an upcoming mission that takes place the next morning, she leaves and Grime enters, shocked that Sasha gave Anne the helmet asking why she hand over control to to Anne since she has no experience leading an army but Sasha is being stubborn and vague about her decision.
The new team sets out on their first mission to destroy a certain factory to stop the manufacturing of the mind control collars that are found on the wildlife. Before the mission even starts, Anne has forgotten a map and is about to rush back to base to get it, which Sasha already got with all the major points labeled. By this point, Anne is even more uncertain she is fit to lead and asks if Sasha should take charge again, which the latter denies. A montage shows that the mission goes poorly under Anne's command, from nearly tasting river water polluted with waste to walking into quick sand after being distracted by watching a show on Anne's phone where they escape a frobot ambush, and looking through the wrong end of a telescope, leading them into another frobot ambush.
After finally arriving at the factory, separated from them by a trench, Anne's idea is for the troops to make a bridge of themselves to cross it after failing to notice a useful grappling hook in Sasha's possession. They fell into the trench because Anne didn't measure the trench width, something Sasha asked her about. Sasha manages to save the frogs and get them to the other side, but by this point Anne officially confirms her suspicions that she's not a good commander, and finally breaks asking Sasha what her angle is. However, Sasha denies there being any angle, but struggles to give a straight answer.
When the noise of their argument attracts the attention of a mind-controlled snake, Anne orders the frogs to attack, they ask for a specific kind of attack and Anne uncertainly tells them to do what feels right. Unfortunately, the snake gobbles up all the frogs and Anne asks Sasha what to do, but Sasha nervously insists that Anne should stay in charge and they do whatever she thinks is best.
At this point, Anne demands Sasha take over again, but Sasha finally reveals her insecurity over doing so and when Anne asks why she won't lead them, Sasha explains that she ruined their friendship the last time she was in charge. Seeing just how adamant Sasha is about not wanting to be in charge again and realizing her intent to save their friendship while reflecting herself on her own mistakes that helped contribute to the overall breakdown, Anne allows herself to be swallowed too, forcing Sasha to take charge of the mission. With proper coordination and maneuver-calling from Sasha, the troops widen themselves in the snake's throat so that it can cough them out, and they succeed in destroying the snake's collar and blowing up the factory, setting a huge setback for Andrias and his army.
Despite the mission succeeding under Sasha's command, she asks Anne to take the helmet back, but Anne makes it plain Sasha is the better commander. As a result, Sasha is still reluctant to lead the whole resistance while Anne is around, but Anne points out that in the past, Sasha would have fought for the helmet, so the very fact that she doesn’t want it proves that she is a changed person and rallies the rebels into accepting Sasha as their commander again, which they practically beg for afterwards. Sasha promises that even though she is calling the shots, it's still very much a partnership now that Anne has returned; the 2 new co-leaders of the resistance shake hands then hug. As the group is heading back to base, Anne discovers she lost a shoe again, much to her annoyance.

Trivia
- Viewership: This episode was watched by 0.28 viewers on its premiere.[4]
- Even though the show shifts back to Amphibia, the opening doesn't change as it still shows Los Angeles, California.
- Despite only witnessing King Andrias ordering a dying Marcy to be placed in a rejuvenation tank,[5] Sasha is technically correct that Marcy is still alive and being held captive, albeit under the Core's influence.
- This was the last episode (along with "Sprivy") to be produced in 2021, according to the credits.
- For unknown reasons, Anne didn't apologize for not believing Sasha that Andrias is evil nor for what she did in the sword fight when reuniting with Sasha.
Revelations and significant events
- Wartwood Swamp was severely attacked and its citizens were forced to relocate to the Plantar family tunnels.
- Anne and the Plantars reunite with Sasha and Grime since the events of "True Colors" and the citizens of Wartwood since the events of "Battle of the Bands".
- Loggle worked out daily since the events of "Turning Point", and has become muscular.
- Sasha has grown out her hair, gained more noticeable muscle mass on her arms and is currently wearing a new set of battle armor.
- Anne and the Plantars had moved on from Sasha's betrayal since that's not that important right now as they need to stop Andrias.
- Sasha's eye color is revealed to be blue.
- Sasha along with the citizens of Wartwood have formed the "Wartwood Resistance."
- Anne briefly becomes the leader but, realizing she is unqualified (due to her absence for a while), hands command back over to Sasha, and the girls agree to co-lead the resistance.
- Anne and Sasha's friendship is officially restored.
- Anne's hair is full of leaves and sticks and one of her shoes goes missing by the end of the episode.
- Anne loses her shoe during the montage between rescuing the Plantars from quicksand and misusing the telescope.
Continuity
- This episode takes place immediately after the previous episode.
- The Plantar family tunnels reappears in this episode since "Family Shrub".
- Mind-controlling Mushrooms' substance appears in this episode since "Children of the Spore".
- The events of that episode are also mentioned by Sprig and Hop Pop.
- Loggle gets buffed up; this was foreshadowed by a wooden statue of a buffed up Loggle, back in "Cane Crazy".
- The characters' map icons during the travelling scenes are the same icons as in "Cane Crazy".
- Sasha mentions that Marcy is being held prisoner, referencing the beginning of "Turning Point".
- When Anne and the Plantars reunite with Sasha and Grime, it wasn't volcanic like the last time they met again.
- The Plantars walk right into quicksand while watching Primthistle Manor on Anne's phone. This is just like when Anne was on her phone and walked into quicksand, as shown in a flashback from "Hop 'Til You Drop".
Allusions
- Final Fantasy VII - When the group walks past the "Take a weapon, leave a weapon" section, one of the weapons resembles the Buster Sword. Furthermore, Andrias's actions on Amphibia are similar to that done by the Shinra Electric Power Company while the Wartwood Resistance mirrors Avalanche (the characters destroying a factory is a reflection of the game's introductory mission of blowing up a Mako reactor).
- Ratatouille - Anne says she got the human/frog bridge idea from a movie where a bunch of mice went into a kitchen to get some oregano, a reference to this 2007 Pixar film.
- Wilhelm scream - Wally makes this scream while being eaten by the giant snake.
- The Guns of Navarone - The episode follows the plot of the movie based on Alistair MacLean's novel about a group of commandos taking out a German battery to allow the rescue of British troops in the Mediterranean.
- Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja - The mind control collars are similar to Catfish Booray's magic powder Gris-gris to mind controlling the swamp animals by creating a collar to control them and making their eyes glow purple from the episode "Swampy Seconds". Also the scene where Mrs. Croaker and One-Eyed Wally destroyed the mind-control collar to free the snake and the Wartwood Resistance destroying the factory is just like Randy Cunningham destroying Booray's Gris-gris and the collars to freed the animals.
- Fallout 3 - The entire plot of the episode is a similar plot to the storyline where the player tries to restore the country.
Errors
- Archie is seen with a helmet and an eye patch in this episode. But when Anne and the Plantars just got to Wartwood, he has his usual look.
- Plot Hole: Anne doesn't like what Sasha did to her of being in charge, but in "Marcy at the Gates", she did something similar to Marcy when Sprig was in danger.
- When Anne is about to jump into the snake's mouth, her right shoe reappears, but she lost her right shoe in the quicksand scene.
- When Loggle talks about his workout regime, the right strap of his goggles briefly disappears.
- When Sasha hands the helmet back to Anne, her face scar is mirrored for a few seconds.
