"Flood, Sweat & Tears" is the second segment of the second episode of the first season of Amphibia, and the fourth episode overall.
It premiered on June 18, 2019 alongside "Cane Crazy".[3]
Synopsis
After Anne's bedroom floods, she and Sprig must bunk together, which they both think will be a lot of fun until they begin to live in each other's personal space, which strained their friendship.
Plot
Anne and Sprig have developed a great friendship with one another, and are very compatible when it comes to working together. Hop Pop learns that the basement, where Anne has been sleeping, is flooded due to burrow bugs. When Sprig offers to help patch the leak, Hop Pop declines his offer, as the water is from the river and could therefore contain dangerous creatures. He offers that Anne sleep on the couch until the leak is fixed, but Sprig suggests that Anne sleep in his room, since they are good friends. While Hop Pop allows it, he fears that no good will come of it, stating that they will soon realize that they do not know each other as well as they think they do once they're in each other's personal space.
Anne and Sprig start off the night okay at first by having a pillow fight and playing "would you rather". However, the two begin having trouble sleeping as Anne wants the room cool while Sprig needs the room warm. Hop Pop suggests Anne sleep on the couch again, but the two friends will not budge and claim they liked bunking with one another. Over the next nine days, the two begin displaying habits that annoy the other, like Anne using her phone past bedtime and eating loud snacks and Sprig croaking and leaving dirty clothes everywhere. The room temperature at night is a continued shared problem. However, despite the obvious growing disdain, both refuse to acknowledge the troubles happening. Anne finally tries to lift Sprig's spirits with another pillow fight, but accidentally breaks one of his homemade action figures. Sprig calmly steps out the room leaving Anne feeling miserable.
Both of them rush down to the basement to find the leak and begin arguing about their living arrangement. They are attacked by river lampreys that try to drag them under. Using their work technique from earlier, they defeat the lampreys who burrow a hole and drain the basement. Hop Pop comes down to tell the two that despite it not working out, they are better friends now for being honest with one another. Anne then moves to the couch to sleep, but finds it lonely. Sprig crafts a can link phone for the two to communicate and play "would you rather", but the moment is ruined when the entire first floor is flooded, prompting Anne to shout that the leak in the basement still hasn't been fixed.

Trivia
- Viewership: This episode was watched by 0.46 million viewers on its premiere.[2]
- It is unknown how the leak was fixed after this episode.
- This marks the first time Anne is seen in her pajamas.
Revelations and significant events
- Anne and Sprig have become best friends and are using a common nickname to describe themselves: Spranne.
- They also have a catchphrase (Spranne against the world) and their own handshake.
- This catchphrase would be later mentioned in "Cursed!", "Reunion", "A Day at the Aquarium", "True Colors" and "The Hardest Thing".
- If the flashback to "Reunion" in "True Colors" is excluded, this is the only episode in which the catchphrase is said multiple times.
- Wally considers Anne and Sprig's friendship disgusting.
- Hop-Pop once shared a room with an unknown roommate and they didn't get along sharing the room.
- Anne and the audience have never seen or been in Sprig's room until this episode.
- Sprig has a collection of action figures which he is very fond of.
- Sprig reveals that although he and the other frogs don't sweat, but he knows what sweating is. This also appears false later on, as many other frogs are seen sweating.
- Sprig is a morning person. It's revealed when Polly is surprised that he isn't up early.
- Hop-Pop's eyesight isn't very good.
- Anne learns that honesty matters more in friendship than physical distance.
Continuity
- This episode takes place one day after the events of the previous episode, two days after the events of the episode before that, and three days after the events of the series premiere.
- Wally is still afraid of and weirded out by Anne.
- Sprig croaks when he sleeps like in "Best Fronds".
- This is the first time Anne and Sprig get into a fight.
Allusions
- "Blood, Sweat and Tears" - The title "Flood, Sweat & Tears" is a play on the phrase "Blood, Sweat and Tears." meaning something which required great difficulty to accomplish.
- Star Wars - The scene of Anne and Sprig fighting the river lampreys in the flooded basement evokes the scene where Luke, Han, Chewbacca and Leia are trapped in the Death Star's trash compactor fighting the creature that lives there.
Errors
- When Sprig and Anne are laughing after doing their handshake, the shading on Anne's hair, arms and sleeves disappears for two frames.
- When Wally walks to Anne and Sprig, his shoes are the same color.
- When Anne says "of course we get along", the band from Sprig's goggles is the same color as his head.
- When Anne asks Hop Pop how long it takes until her room is fixed, there's an extra black line on her shoe.
- This happens again when Sprig suggest Anne stays in his room.
- After Anne and Sprig left the basement, Hop Pop is about to go underwater. In this scene, the shading on his arms is missing.
- When Sprig starts the tour in his room, Anne is holding nothing in her hands. However, in the previous shot, she was holding lots of her stuff.
- When Anne and Sprig are in bed, there is an extra black line on Sprig's head. This could have been for the shading on his head, which can be seen in a later shot.
- The next morning, after the first night, Anne is wearing different shorts than when she went to bed.
- When Hop Pop and Polly go downstairs towards the end of the episode, Hop Pop continues walking past the point where he would have reached the basement before the scene changes to show him arriving in the room.
Edits
- In the Southeast Asia broadcast, Hop Pop's line "What the heck's going on down here?" was shortened to "What’s going on down here?", also the words "dang" and "darn" were cut.
