"Grime's Pupil" is the second segment of the thirteenth episode of the third season of Amphibia, and the ninety-eighth episode overall.
It premiered on April 9, 2022, alongside "Mother of Olms".[1][2]
Synopsis
Due to dire circumstances, Grime is forced to train an apprentice.[2]
Plot
Anne and Sasha are at the rebel base discussing what Mother Olm said during their meeting; knowing they need to retrieve the music box back from Andrias now more than ever, they decide that the Wartwood Resistance should find a lot more recruits. Sasha has contacted Grime's sister Beatrix to convince her secret toad army garrison members to join forces with their resistance against Andrias. Thinking that Sprig and Grime would be the perfect way to prove that the frogs and toads can work together, she sent the pair to greet them only for Anne to point out that Sprig and Grime can't work together, especially since Sprig defeated Grime in their previous fight in Newtopia.
Anne and Sasha quickly rush to Sprig and Grime and appear right on time as Beatrix arrives to meet with everyone. Beatrix is reluctant to join forces since the idea of Toads assisting a frog resistance force is laughable and also adds that frogs can't even fight. Sprig points out that he previously beat Grime in a one-on-one duel, much to the delight of Beatrix who now can use that to ridicule her brother.
Frustrated, Grime challenges his sister to a standard one-on-one arena battle, and the loser must join the other's force. However, he forgot about Toad law, which states she can choose any of his allies to fight instead of doing so herself and of course, she chooses Sprig. After she leaves, Anne and Sasha are upset with Grime for endangering Sprig's life and putting the rebellion in jeopardy. However, Sprig is confident he will beat her but Grime is not convinced since getting lucky during a siege is not the same thing as gladiatorial combat.
Now Grime has to train Sprig, which of course the latter thinks he doesn't need lessons from Grime. The two keep arguing until Sasha makes them do it anyway, lest they be banished until the war starts. As they head into the forest to begin training, they continue to bicker with Sprig reminding Grime that he tried to kill Hop Pop back in South Tower and yet they still bicker as Grime tries to train Sprig like a toad, but in time, Grime starts to realize that he has no chance of getting Sprig up to toad stature since his body is completely different.
However, after an encounter with some Hybeenas where the two must work together to rid themselves of the beasts, Grime realizes that Sprig has strengths of his own. While fighting together they finish off the Hybeenas and point out each other's strengths as fighters. Grime is impressed by Sprig's speed and accuracy, and Sprig is impressed by how Grime turned his rage into power.
As a result, Grime realizes that he should be training him based on his frog strengths instead of standard toad training, and a training montage begins, this time far more successful than the previous.
It's now time for the big fight, and while Grime still doesn't think Sprig has a chance, he's excited to see his pupil go into the ring. Sprig uses all his speed to outwit Beatrix, but when she finally gets her hands on him, she begins to insult him and frogs in general. Sprig then channels his rage into a powerful headbutt that takes Beatrix down.
Beatrix openly admits that a frog-toad fighting style is actually impressive, and is excited to see what will come of a frog-toad army now that her army is joining the rebellion. Sprig thanks Grime for helping him and they apologize to one another; becoming better acquainted. While it undercuts the lesson, Grime decides to take the opportunity to gloat over Beatrix losing to a frog, much like what she did earlier to him, and she punches him before politely leaving.
