Gina Marie Groh is the chief judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia. She has served as chief judge since 2015. She joined the court in 2012 after a nomination from President Barack Obama. Prior to her nomination, she was a West Virginia Circuit Court judge of the Twenty-Third Judicial Circuit, comprised of Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan Counties, West Virginia.[1][2]

Early life and education

Groh earned her B.S. in 1986 at Shepherd University and went on to earn her J.D. three years later at West Virginia University College of Law.[2]

Professional career

From 1989 until 1998, Groh was a private practice attorney, practicing in Martinsburg, West Virginia (3 years), Washington D.C. (4 years) and Baltimore and Hagerstown, Maryland (3 years). She then served as the Assistant prosecutor for Berkeley County, West Virginia from 1998-2002 and for Jefferson County, West Virginia from 2002-2006. She joined the Twenty-Third Judicial Circuit, comprised of Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan Counties, West Virginia.[2]

In March 2011, Senators Jay Rockefeller and Joe Manchin asked President Obama to nominate Gina Marie Groh for the seat on the federal bench left vacant after U.S. District Judge W. Craig Broadwater died in 2006. Judge Groh was then nominated by Obama to the Northern District of West Virginia on May 19, 2011.[3][4]

On March 15, 2012, Groh was confirmed by the United States Senate to the United States District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia with a vote of 95-2.[6]
