Disney on Parade: 100 Years of Magic was a parade at Tokyo Disneyland. The parade celebrated the 100th anniversary of Walt Disney. It ran from April 15, 2000 to January 21, 2003. From 2002 to 2003, the parade was sponsored by NTT DoCoMo.
Following the parade's final run on January 21, 2003, five of the parade's floats (the first four and the Alice in Wonderland float) were recycled for Disney on Parade at Hong Kong Disneyland, which ran from 2005 to 2010.
The parade was held in honor of the 100th anniversary of Walt Disney himself, which was on December 5, 2001. The history of Disney movies, starting with Mickey Mouse's animation production, was reconsidered in three periods, matching the flow of American entertainment. The total length was 700m, the initial stage was composed of 14 floats.
Parade Units
Opening Unit
Title Float: The parade begins with several dancers wielding red ribbons, as they lead the way to a float with the parade's name on it.
The Band Concert: Based on the 1935 animated cartoon. A band leads the way for a giant eight-meter-high inflatable of Mickey Mouse, with his right hand holding a baton, which moves up and down. His shoes also move slightly to give the glimpse he is "walking".
The Good Old Days Unit
Animation Book: This art-and-design features a flipbook of the classic design of Mickey Mouse. Chip and Dale also appear on the float.
Plane Crazy: Based on the 1928 animated cartoon. Styled after the classic days of Walt Disney Productions and Hollywood, this float is led by several human filmstrips. On top of the float are statues of Mickey and Minnie riding the airplane. Preceding after the float are several human paintbrushes.
Silly Symphonies: Focusing on the titular series of cartoons, this float is styled like a forest area, complete with several ladybugs. The Three Little Pigs and The Big Bad Wolf appear on the back of the float, composing the music.
Farmyard: This float, led by several human cows and chicks; mainly features Disney's classic "barnyard" characters. where Clara Cluck, Donald Duck, Goofy, Clarabelle Cow, Horace Horsecollar and other barnyard animals recreate various famous opera scenes.
Mary Poppins: Based on the 1964 animated and live-action musical film. Mary Poppins herself and Bert ride the horses from the carousel from the movie as the Penguin Waiters follow on the float.
The Happy Days Unit
Minnie Drive-In: Set within the titular parlor, styled in the style of a 1950s diner; it is ran by Minnie Mouse. She has hired Roger Rabbit, Winnie the Pooh and Tigger as employees, and Pluto as mascot. Several roller-skaters lead the float off with Tigger, while 50s rock-'n'-roll style music plays.
Villains Disco: Dedicated to the Disney Villains, this float with rock-styling and flamethrowers has Maleficent leading the band of evil, with its members consisting of Cruella De Vil, the Evil Queen, Honest John and Gideon (replacing Hades and Ed during its earlier run). Since the middle of 2001, the unit has been cut.
A Bug's Life: Based on the 1998 Disney and Pixar film. Heimlich sits atop a giant radio with a 1990s Disney Channel logo, while Flik and Atta appear on front. Several human ants lead off the unit.
Castle of Dreams: The second portion of the finale is set within a large, shining castle known as the "Castle of Dreams". On a platform near the top of the Castle towers is none other than Mickey Mouse, adorning a rainbow sequinned outfit with a matching top hat. Joining him below are his fellow Toy Story pals Woody, who sits in the middle of the float; while Jessie and Buzz Lightyear stand dancing on the left and right respectively. Near the end of the parade's song, during the "Hip Hip Hooray!" portion, two hidden-away cannons shoot out colorful Mickey Mouse-shaped confetti at the audience.
NTT DoCoMo Sponsor Float: Beginning in April 2002, this float was added once NTT DoCoMo began sponsoring the parade. It has the company's logo with a cloud theme to match the unit.
