Role in the film[]
Flounder is first seen swimming with Ariel who is telling her that she shouldn't be far from her father's home, thinking that her father would be upset that she is not present, which Ariel replies to him to not fool around. Seeing a sunken ship from a distance, Flounder warns Ariel that the two have gone far enough just as Ariel tries to catch up with him inside the ship. As Ariel continues to explore inside the ship, she tells Flounder to keep a lookout for dangers that might lurk within the area such as sharks, just before a shark passes by. Upon entering the ship, Flounder follows alongside Ariel who is collecting objects such as a fork and a corkscrew inside the ship, to which behind the two is a large shark, which swims towards the two and attempts to eat them.
As Flounder and Ariel are swimming away from Glut, Flounder gets knocked into the sea floor, causing him to be stuck on the sand while Ariel finds a way to distract the shark by causing him to crash into a mirror, leaving him unable to move. Flounder manages to get himself out of the sand and escape with Ariel. Having escaped, Ariel asks Flounder if he is safe, which he replies to her that he saw sharks bigger than the one he saw in the sunken ship area. Suddenly, Scuttle dives into the water grabbing a sardine for a taste, giving Flounder a fright. As Ariel and Flounder approach Scuttle, she approaches Flounder and Ariel talking to them about their experience at the sunken ship, just as Ariel shows her a fork (which Scuttle incorrectly calls it a "dinglehopper") and a corkscrew, only for Sebastian to approach Ariel who escorts her and Flounder back to King Triton. At home, Flounder discusses with Triton that he and Ariel were exploring a sunken ship area, chased by a shark. Triton, however, warns his daughter that this area is dangerous to explore, just as he becomes furious of Ariel for missing the Coral Moon event.
Flounder follows Ariel into her grotto full of human objects she collected where she tells him about trying to make her father understand why humans are not that bad to all merfolk. During the musical number "Part of Your World", Flounder observes Ariel longing to explore the surface of the ocean trying make the surface part of her world. However, as Ariel sees fireworks exploding on the surface of the ocean, Ariel decides to check out what if there is any danger, much to Flounder's worry to which it is revealed that Prince Eric is having a birthday celebration on the ship with his fellow sailors.
Flounder later appears following Ariel preparing to drop off more objects in her collection, only to find Triton inside her grotto where he is furious of Ariel who went to the above world, as he warns her that all contact between merfolk and humans is forbidden, just before Triton destroys the treasures in Ariel's collection. Flounder and Sebastian observe Ariel who is sad that her treasure are destroyed. However, just as Ursula (who appears on an image created by her eels Flotsam and Jetsam) offers Ariel to change her fate, she accepts the offer to change her fate, much to Flounder and Sebastian who are worried about her encounter with the sea witch, leading the fish and crab duo to follow her and make sure she is safe. Flounder and Sebastian arrive at Ursula's lair where she plans to transform her into a human so that she can fall in love with Prince Eric.
After Ariel transforms into a human, Flounder and Sebastian approach her on the surface, just as Flounder is suddenly captured by a fisherman named "Joshua". On the ship, Flounder alerts Scuttle that Ursula took Ariel's voice, leaving her unable to speak as Ursula put a spell on Ariel in exchange for a pair of human legs, which Sebastian pushes Flounder off the ship, telling him to get away from the fisherman before he captures him. Later on the second day, Sebastian commands Flounder and Scuttle to perform a romantic stimulation to help Ariel fall in love with Eric, which Flounder commands a flock of ibises to bring in the winds to add more music just before Sebastian sings. During the musical number "Kiss the Girl", Flounder takes part in the song with Scuttle and Sebastian singing along with each other. He later appears swimming with a school of fish to serenade Eric; however, Ariel's attempt to kiss Eric was unsuccessful, due to Flotsam and Jetsam who knocked the couple off the boat.
On the third day after Scuttle found out that "Vanessa" is actually Ursula in disguise, Flounder and Sebastian approach Ariel who is losing faith in herself just before Scuttle reports to Ariel about this, leading Scuttle to alert Flounder to report to King Triton about this. Later after Scuttle stops the wedding between Eric and "Vanessa", the latter reveals to be Ursula in disguise just as Flounder, Scuttle, and Sebastian retreat. With Ursula defeated, Ariel and Eric fall in love with each other just as he bids a farewell to Flounder, Scuttle, and Sebastian just before Ariel and Eric leave.
