The Ugly Bug Ball was a live show located at A Bug's Land at Disney California Adventure. It was a 15-minute live show featuring characters from A Bug's Life and features songs about bugs which fits the area's theme and opened on October 7, 2002 to coincide with the opening of A Bug's Land.
The show began with Barry, a red puppet spider serving as the show's one-bug band musician who often makes bug-related puns while presenting Madame Butterfly in front of the audience. Madame Butterfly (played by an actress) appears on stage and asks the audience to know if they are ready to have fun at "Madame Butterfly's School of the Dance". As Madame Butterfly asks the audience to know what a ball is, she explains to them that a ball is a big dance room which she calls the show "The Ugly Bug Ball" which fits the show's theme to which after the song she sang to the audience, she approaches Barry to know what type of spider he is to which he explains to her that he is a modern spider who owns a "web-site" (a pun on a spider web and a website). After talking to Barry, Madame Butterfly asked the audience to participate in the show with her to which as volunteer audience members arrive on stage, Madame Butterfly teaches them to dance with her, usually with the music "Flight of the Bumblebee" by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov to which after participating, she asks Barry that even though he used classical music for the show, she offered him to play conga music during the show. While playing conga music, Madame Butterfly sang "The Ants Go Dancing", a special rendition of "The Ants Go Marching" just as Flik and Atta from A Bug's Life arrive on stage dancing with Madame Butterfly on stage inviting them to the Ugly Bug Ball.
After the song, Flik approaches Madame Butterfly, explaining to her that she has a lot of bugs watching the show. Madame Butterfly asks the audience to participate with Flik and Atta during the show and have fun and dance with them, teaching volunteer guests to dance with the ants with bug-themed songs like "Jitterbugs", "The Heimlich Maneuver" (named after Heimlich, a caterpillar and one of the Circus Bugs), and "Tarantula Tango" just before reprising a reprise of "Jitterbugs". After the song, Madame Butterfly presents Flik and Atta one final song teaching the audience dance to a very special song, "The Ugly Bug Ball" from Summer Magic written by the Sherman Brothers. After the song, Madame Butterfly thanks the audience for attending the Ugly Bug Ball, ending the show.
While Dave Foley and Julia Louis-Dreyfus do not reprise their roles as Flik and Atta respectively in the show, Wally Wingert and Jodi Benson also voiced the characters replacing Foley and Dreyfus respectively in the former show.
