Such a personal film that it almost feels taboo to watch it. Like staring into another person's thoughts and memories. Really hit close to home as Bug in this would be around my dads age when I was 12 (I believe my dad would have been 2 years older). I remember those clashes of my dad living his youth still while having a son that visited him on the weekends. It's hard to explain to people that it looks strange from the outside, and to be honest it isn't the healthiest way to raise a child, but it makes those little moments where your father learns how to be a father core memories for you. I still remember my moments where my dad realized his moments, and it brought us very close. So to see films that do this concept well like Bird and Aftersun connect with me quite a bit.
Everyone in this is phenomenal. I watched it for Barry Keoghan who is one of my favorite actors of these last 8 years but Nykiya Adams kills it as Bailey. Really makes the film for me. I loved the visuals as well it's a gorgeous film. Soundtrack hits hard as well. Some complaints though that stuck out to me. First the film has a border. I actually thought this was really cool and gave it a memory like quality. However I did notice the image would bleedthrough and show on the edge of the border. I found this really distracting as it kept catching my attention. Some moments have visual clutter on the camera as well such as a hair in one scene. The film is going for a organic look i believe but its a nitpick for me. I also wish Bug (Barry Keoghan) and Baileys brother Hunter were in it more. I didn't really care for the brother running away subplot as I barely knew him. Bug also doesn't get a lot of redemption moments where I feel like the train station scene is a pivotal change in his outlook on life. Wish they did more with that honestly. The magical realism stuff I'm a little iffy on but I think im leaning positive in that regard, though usually it would be a negative. I'm not big in magical realism.
In summary Bird is a great film and very close to a 4/5 for me. I think it will be one of the most slept on films from 2024. Check this one out if you have access to it (I used MUBI).
]]>Back to loving it. It has a bunch of flaws for me but it also has a lot of things i never noticed before that I really appreciate now. This is the Star Wars dilm with the most personality. So many new creatures and cultures that are just suoer fun to see on screen. Lots of character moments as well. Everyone loves the Vader / Luke moments but I have to say one of my favorite small moments is C3P0 telling the ewoks a story. I love how it calls back to his first encounter with Luke in episode 4 where Luke asks for war stories and C3P0 tells him that he has never been a good storyteller. I like to think this scene shiws how much even the droids have been changed through the trilogy. The 3rd act is so god damn good I love it. The 1st act is basically just wrapping up Empire but still is good for the most part as well. 5th favorite Star Wars film and has room to grow i believe
]]>I think this movie is actually missing scenes. Like 3 of them. There is a moment in the 2nd act that just feels like there is no build up at all, just comes out of nowhere and leaves you this feeling of confusion like did I black out?
Anyways this is really bad. Rolled my eyes when the veterans did a slowmo walk, guess this film thinks it came out in 2002. Awful acting from everyone, sadly even Jesse Plemons isn't safe in this one. Taylor Kitsch has to have one of the worst filmographies in the industry. Visually effects for the alien ships is decent and thats the only positive. The visual effects for the aliens and weirdly the horses(?) look like things I fought in the first Resistance game. The 3rd act is so fucking boring oh my god. Who thought this would make a good idea for a movie? Like when they bring up the grid map to look actually like battleship did they expect that to be exciting? Very stupid script and dialogue to go with it. This is prior to all these shitty films copying the mcu, back then they all just copied Michael Bays Transformers and it's way too obvious. Really bad film don't watch it it's a waste of 2 hours
]]>I'm a big fan of Wonder Woman's origin story. It's a hard one to mess up and i think both this and the 2017 Patty Jenkin film are both good adapations. This one has some rough animation here and there (the character models are pretty ugly) but I gotta say i love that it doesnt shy away from the Greek mythology. It goes very into it actually. I also quite like the dynamic between Diane and Steve. Final battle is fun as well. Not the best of the dc animated films by a long shot but much better than the other early films in the 2007-2024 run
]]>The 2025 52 Directors Challenge week 1: James Cameron
Some friends and I for 2025 will be looking at 52 films we have never seen from 52 important directors in film. Week 1 for most of us is James Cameron. Going to post my review of the film first followed by a write up on James Cameron and my thoughts on his films / as a director
Should preface that we (Doodlebarb and I) watched the special edition cut of this that is I believe 28 minutes longer.
I am in awestruck at the marvel of filmmaking that is the Abyss. There are many stories on how dangerous of a shoot this was, and you can easily tell that from what is on screen. What you don't hear much of though is just how ambitious the story of this film is. I don't understand what the 28 minutes extra could have been as everything felt essential and purposeful. I love this film. Honestly, I'm having a hard time deciding if it is better than Aliens for me. Incredible story that had my attention the entire time. Ed Harris as Virgil is phenomenal. He's been one of my favorite actors for years now. I don't want to spoil this at all as it is just a incredible mishmash of genres and ideas that really felt like it was James Cameron thinking it would be his last film. Just insane is the only word I can think of, and I loved every minute. I can't think of any complaints currently to be honest. Highly recommend to scifi fans and really fans of films that make you fill claustrophobic. The underwater camera work in this is second to none. Huge surprise to finish off the 1st week of 2025 and to jumpstart this challenge. I couldn't be happier.
Director Write Up: Often cited as a very difficult director to work with, James Cameron definitely has a vision for each of his films and will strive to achieve that image. He has a rather small but strong filmography (Avatar films being the only things he worked on in the last 3 decades to the bitterness of some). I'm a fan of his grand visuals of each of his films and love how he just really has to have the color blue all over his films. I actually haven't seen quite a few of his films so far including Titanic, the 2 Avatar films, and both of his Terminator films. I do plan on fixing that though later this year. Really great director and a great figure in hollywood both for scifi and box office earnings. I firmly believe he deserves the respect he gets no matter how controversial his work ethics may be. Fully deserves a spot on our director challenge as well.
Week 2 is Roman Polanski; I apologize in advance. Will be watching the Pianist myself.
]]>It happened. I always heard Hitchcock was the master of suspense and after 7 films (including the masterpiece Psycho that I adore) i felt that suspense come out of nowhere while watching Frenzy. At the end of this film is a small moment where it really looks like everything is gonna go wrong for the protagonist. It goes from 0 to 100 real fast and it looks like the "right" man is going to get away with everything and I just felt myself getting super alert and waiting to see what happens. That's the moment that brought this to a 4 from a 3.5 for me. It was a sensation I don't feel often watching film.
Frenzy itself is very good. It's very dark for Hitchcock. Lots of violence and sequel situations that I don't normally associate with him though most of his films do have violence in them. The 70s hit him hard (in a positive manner). There is some just stupendous camera work in Frenzy. About halfway through is a backtracking camera scene that just blew my mind i was so impressed by it. The whole potato truck scene is also incredible. This is a low 4/5 for me i gotta say however. Some scenes i didn't care for and honestly could have been cut to save on time and bring the pace a bit tighter. Really the whole police wife cooking schtick got a little old. Gotta say I loved how organic all the bar and market scenes were. Lots of natural conversations happening that made the scenes feel authentic. Really the ending though is where this shines in that little 30 second slice of the film. Just really caught me by surprise
Not as good as the highs of Hitchcock but as a late film from a director who has been around since the silent film days I gotta say it's really impressive and goes to show how adept Hitchcock was behind the scenes.
]]>While I wouldn't say it's great, I quite liked Nightbitch and it seems i did more than most on here. Might be due to Amy Adams. I just think she's one of the best actresses there is and is great and making you feel her sadness. Great pacing helps as well. I do think it's a bit surface level with it's ideas though I like what it does with them. I wish it got a little weirder, it did for a second but then bowed out. Still it looks great, made me laugh, and again is casted well. Honestly don't get the hate for this one i was expecting it to be Uber trash based off the reviews I saw. It's at least in the top half of 2024 films for me. With that ive seen all the major searchlight picture films for 2024 and have to say they didn't miss at all for me. Very strong year for them and im happy to see Disney letting them operate autonomously from the rest of the company
]]>Tom Hanks Saturday #1
One of the peaks of this little subgenre of films. Just a incredible, really inspiring performance from Tom Hanks that feels different from everything else he has done. Can't believe he really went through that transformation for the 2nd act. Really the 3rd act (this i would say is a 4 act film instead of the traditional 3 acts). Love the minimal use of music until that final few scenes. Really gives off that vibe of isolation. I do think it gets a little too sappy near the end but I appreciate the message of it all. The way they make you care about Wilson and Chuck as a relationship is kind of amazing. Just a really strong film that is unique from both Tom Hanks & Robert Zemeckis. One of the best films from the year 2000. You think he would have had to go back to work eventually or you think fedex set him up for life? Also films from this era sure loved to do the unopened box as a symbol trope (I love this and we should bring it back)
]]>Such a great film with a really great story. Love how this looks visually. Very charming and very pleasing to the eye. My biggest gripe about the first film was the villian. Fortunately here Hugh Grant kills it and gives a very memorable performance. I will say I think the first film is actually funnier. This one i didn't laugh much but I still overall prefer this film as it just is a improvement in every other way. Love that Paddington is a felon in this one, just feels right to call him a convict. Ending is beautiful and so wholesome. Great series and I can't wait to see the 3rd one in a month or so when it releases in the states!
]]>The best sequel of all time still and I'm gonna go ahead and say the best scifi film ever as well. On the Rushmore of the genre permantly. Insane how good this film is and it's back at number 5 for me on my top 250 (sorry Fellowship of the Ring gotta put you at 6 again). Just insane how rewatchable this film is and how ballsy it must have been to end this on such a downer. Like the good guys lose in this one and I love that. It makes the eventual win that much sweeter in Return of the Jedi. Yoda is (this one at least, prequels ruin him) one of the best characters in fiction. Soundtrack is incredible with some great new tracks. The effects look amazing. This is also the film that personally I believe has more positive changes than negatives with the new versions of it such as the Emperor looking like we know and love as well as the changes to Cloud City. Every character is built upon and the charisma is at a max especially with Leia and Han. It's also the funniest Star Wars to me. C3po especially is hilarious in this ajd kind of a stand out film for him up until Rise of Skywalker. Its so amazing and slightly beats out the original as my favorite film in the series. Perfect movie should sit at a 5/5 average on letterboxd tbh if the world was full of good people
]]>What a wholesome film. Really charming and adorable. Very Wes Anderson coded with the coloring and style of the film. Loved everything with Paddington exploring London. Im a sucker fir fish out of water stories. One of my favorite story tropes. The family is so charming and very fleshed out for a children film. I cant say the same for Nicole Kidmans character sadly. I just didn't really care for them much in this and felt it was a bit too goofy. Overall though it's a great film and I'm super excited to check out the much beloved sequel soon!
]]>Lee Woo-Jin like top 3 Bond villians i swear
You know in 15 years I would not have been able to tell you what this film is about correctly prior to watching it. What a insane film that charades as a action flick (a good one at that) but takes it much further by just being a total mental beat down on the characters and audience. Insane story with a 3rd act that had my jaw drop when I realized what was happening. Insane cinematography that feels very Amelie / Wes Anderson ish but like more fucked up. Some amazing shots sprinkled throughout. Some really great quotes as well, I particularly love the tag line of this film. The soundtrack is so dope. I love every piece of music. The hallway scene is probably almost as iconic as the Akira bike slide. This is just a incredibly stylish film in every aspect and that just makes the story hit that much harder. Amazing first film to watch from Park Chan-Wook. I cant wait to watch some of his other works which I'll get a chance to soon with him coming up in the 2025 director chalkenge in a few weeks. Absolutely recommend this film, just maybe watch it by yourself before inviting anyone else to watch it.
]]>I usually tend to like these collections of animations from different anime studios / styles (animatrix, halo legends, love death robot all slap) but this one really squanders the idea. All the styles don't go far enough besides the first one yet that one has such stilted dialogue. Really forgettable and near the bottom of the dcau for me currently. Some neat moments but none of the shorts I would say are that good. Early years of this collection have been rough to say the least (2007 to 2024 i believe is the years considered DCAU)
]]>Nothing better to start the new year with than watching Star Wars. One of the biggest staples of my life is this franchise and I will continue to stan every aspect of it (yes the post Disney stuff is good to me, check out the High Repubkic books i love them). The essential space adventure film for me. Anytime i watch it i get so hyped it's like the 1st time every time. I will say as the years go by i do prefer episode V and this one has dropped in my top 250 a little. Only from top 10 to top 20 though. It's a masterpiece that is just so full of creative juice that I notice new things with every viewing. I love this film so much. I love this whole series so much. Even the bad stuff (prequels, sorry I'm not a prequel defender) I still can't wait to watch yet again. Will never get tired of this idc where it goes I'm here for the ride!
]]>The most disappointing of the 3 christmas releases. It starts to do something interesting with gender dynamics and how even when the roles are reversed the male character still is the one with little to lose while the female has a lot to lose but then it kind of restarts the 2nd act again? Only for it to put itself right back into the same situation? Weird choice that leads to a very weak 3rd act. Nicole Kidman is great in this but I really didnt care for Harris Dickinsons character much. For a film that has the portrayal of a 90s erotica thriller mixed with more modern standards it's kind of missing the erotic & the thriller parts of that genre. Underwhelming and a miss for me but not outright terrible.
]]>The best of the series which i can't say for many horror series that the 5th one is my favorite. The ending is a all timer favorite of mine and really I love how different this one is from the others with a very intense third act. If thr cgi was better and some characters written in a way to not be as cringey as they are i think I would say this is a great flick. As it is though it's solid and stands on top of the others in the series. Looking forward to Bloodlines in 2025!
]]>This one got me so conflicted because I really didn't expect the ending and I just absolutely loved that they went there and it just felt like the culmination of the series in a perfect way. However the quality of the filmmaking has dipped, the continuous soundtrack sucks, and the humor is so bad compared to the original. It's not a good film but has a lot of heart in it and really shows the finite amount of time we have here and the impact people have in a very homegrown way. If it was better made I would honestly put this up there with like og Clerks & Chasing Amy. It's quite admirable but also bad. Hate to say that but it's true, still kind of like it though. About on par with Clerks 2 for me
And with that the View Askewniverse is done! My ranking below
1.Chasing Amy (4/5)
2.Clerks (3.5/5)
3.Dogma (3.5/5)
4.Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back (3/5)
5.Mallrats (3/5)
6.Clerks 3 (2.5/5)
7.Clerks 2 (2.5/5) pretty much tied in my head with clerks 3
8.Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (1.5/5)
The Iron Claw of 2024 for me. In that it comes in at like the last day of the year to become one of my favorite films of the entire year. I adored everything about this.
Actually my first Clint Eastwood film. I own a bunch of them but just haven't gotten to his films yet. I will definitely be fixing that soon because this was absolutely incredible. I had no idea how it was gonna end and it left me with such conflicted emotions on the story that I really haven't felt from any other film all year. I can't think of any other film from 2024 that left me questioning morals and thinking of my own opinions on a main character as much as Juror #2 did. I've seen a complaint that it's a bit silly how little evidence the court has against the boyfriend on trial, yet I think that's intentional. It seems the point is to show how personal bias is present from the beginning with a jury and all of the court is just theatrics. The closing arguments alone would be seen as outrageous yet I'm sure arguments like that have swayed people in the past. Definitely seems like a critique of the American justice system itself (very based might i add). Nicolas Hoults best performance for me i think. I adored him in this film. Same for Toni Collette who is just so good at picking roles. There is like 2 scenes that felt way too much like 12 Angry Men (though in between it's hard not to have ties to that) but legit my only complaint. This & The Substance are both so close to a 5/5 for me that on rewatch they could both go up to it. Incredible film and a great showcase on why courtroom dramas are hands down one of my favorite genres now
]]>Worst episode by far. Gives us that embarrassing "gamers live multiple lives" vibe from the early 2010 playstation ads. What a shitty episode to end on. Really the 2nd half of this series has been a bit of a drop in quality from the 1st half. This is the only episode I would say is truly awful though and should absolutely just be skipped
]]>Really cool to see this even if it's animated. About what I imagined happened at the funeral in my head
]]>Kind of underwhelming if im being honest. Similar to the Exodus episode it's a tried and true concept in scifi (recently Alex Garlands Devs miniseries touched on similar concepts in a much better way). I didn't really care for the generic visuals. There are some moments I like in it but not enough to care that much. I think the show is losing quite a bit of steam in these final few episodes
]]>Bottom of the franchise and one of the worst films of 2009. The cgi is so awful it ruins every death scene. Some of the worst characters in horror all written to stereotypes that have aged so poorly. I think there is a single positive. The opening credits are cool, that's it. Every thing in this film sucks and im surprised it didn't kill off the franchise. The 3d effects are incredibly bad as well, and tbh I have a feeling if you were to watch it in 3d it would be ever worst somehow. Awful film
]]>For a small moment, there was a spark near the end of the film. A nice sentimental moment that caught me by surprise and I started to consider if maybe this was better than I thought it was. Sadly that spark was thrown off a cliff with a awful 3rd act that goes so overboard with being meta that it just falls flat on its face. Add to that a huge majority of the jokes suck, ugly ass visuals, and some pretty weak performances and you have my least favorite of the Askewniverse so far. Sucks as up to this point I would say everything was alright at worst. One more to go! Hopefully Clerks 3 is better than this
]]>Love when Jonze does the more relationship focused stories. Her is a all time favorite of mine and this short film is now also one of the few short films I've given more than a 3. Love the creativity of it while being a very simple story. Andrew Garfield is great as the main character. Very cute, very sad, all Jonze staples on display. Great stuff
]]>Definitely a step down from the earlier Kevin Smith films and has a awful harsh coloring to it but again I found myself liking it more than I thought i would. Was expecting like a 1.5 - 2 from memory but something brought it up from that for me. Maybe the fact it has a bit more of a emotional center than most 2000 comedies do. The themes of age and events destroying friendships is very relatable sadly. Some great joke moments such as the Lord of the Rings segment and the Pillow Pants section. Also some horrendous and baffling choices though like the erm big climax with Kelly and the Stud. Big misfire there. I really like how Kevin Smith has cultivated a group of people who will always be in his films. Feels like a family and that's the number 1 thing i believe the films are trying to achieve. Wish I could say more positives to knock it up to at least a 3 but as it is this is a very sloppy film that I still enjoy. 2.5 and a heart
]]>Kind of felt like a intro video when you log in to a game for the 1st time. Hate to make the comparison but think similar to the Overwatch 1 Wintston here intro. What sucks is there isn't a game for this anymore to tie in. Hard to enjoy it knowing that. Downfall of this series i guess is it relies on the ideas of a game at least but here you don't even have that to rely on. Still it looks good and isn't too long that it gets boring.
]]>Nicolas Cage Saturday #4
To wrap up the cage Saturdays we checked out Spike Jonzes Adapation.
What a weird film this is. i think out of the 3 Jonze films ive seen its my least favorite but overall i still enjoyed it. Especially the 2nd act actually. I thought the ideas of how different humans adapt to events was really well done especially showing the flashback of why John is missing his 2 front teeth. I think the 3rd act kind of lost me a bit as it's a tonal disconnect from the rest of the story, though i get why they did that. It's a bit above my intelligence i think, I felt confused at moments. Nicolas Cage gives a great duel performance and has a great cast of people around him with Judy Greer, Meryl Streep, and Tilda Swinton being the "women in his life". Was hoping to like this one on the same level as Being John Malkovich but still a solid film that showcases the writing of Charlie Kaufman and the insanity of projects Spike Jonze likes to be attached to.
Next month Saturday actor is America's dad Tom Hanks! 4 films we are doing below
1. Castaway
2. Catch me if you can
3. Sully
4. A beautiful day
We will also be starting our 52 director challenge next week with week 1: James Cameron!
]]>I thought this one was cute and a fun explanation for a roguelike game. Great visuals and tune to it. Very short though i think only a couple minutes longer than the mega man episode
]]>What the fuck Zemeckis
This is one of the most boring films I've ever seen. Absolutely dreadful. I just can't comprehend it and how Robert Zemeckis' name is on it. Just so soul crushing. Wasted 2 hours of my life on this one. Will never watch it again and honestly my opinion on Zemeckis has been lowered due to this film. Nothing else I can say really besides it's hilarious the Del Toro Pinocchio also came out the same year and is apparently Absolutely a grand slam
]]>Flashback Friday with Tom & Paiz
I dont think I've ever seen a film quite like the Fall. It is beautiful with a gigantic scope of vast environments all shot wide. The story plays with your expectations to defy them and give you a ending you wanted but didn't think possible. Really wonderful stuff. The 4k on mubi is gorgeous. The colors have such variety and touch on everything from the costumes to the buildings to the animals shown throughout. Really a visual feast for the eyes. Love the characters and the events that transpire. I do think the final few fleeting moments at the end are a bit sudden even though it is what I wanted to happen. Wish they spent a few more minutes on it but that's my only complaint. On rewatch I may not even see that as a negative. Very close to a 5 for me. Not quite a hidden gem but a film I think more people should definitely check out. Heard a 2025 physical was in the works and if so I will definitely be getting it (don't look up how much a blu ray copy of this currently is going for)
]]>Really liked this one. Lots of comparisons to Interstellar in reviews but I think that's just from people who don't realize the story of Interstellar has been done plenty of times in science fiction for decades prior to that film. Time being relative as a plot device wasn't created when Nolan did Interstellar. As it is this is a complete story in 15 minutes and actually got me interested to see what the game really is about. I would say goal accomplished in that regard
]]>Maybe I'm just glazing at this point but all of these Smith films have gotten like a half star higher rating from me than I thought they would. So far from Clerks all the way to Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back I have enjoyed each film. This one is so outrageous that just like Freddy got Fingered which released the same year I end up actually liking it a bit (this more than Freddy though). Jokes are about 50/50 for me but the 3rd act is so fun it saves the film for me. Loved seeing how all the characters come back and the cameos are so fun to recognize. I especially love CockKnocker Mark Hamill and Good Will Hunting 2. This legit is my Endgame, when Wes Craven showed up got me more hyped than I thought possible rip to a king
]]>I like this one about as much as the original. It's a movie to throw on just to watch something for the kills and not much more to it. The kills are a lot more mischievous this time but the story dampens my enjoyment quite a bit. Mainly i hate the whole picture angke because it's just the 2 leads walking around staring at photos trying to make connections. Oh and the ending kind of sucks as well. Won't go into spoils why I feel that way but overall it's a very rushed 3rd act finale. Still its a fun time, but just like the first film I wouldn't say a good time.
]]>It's surprising how a film with a shit demon fight in the 2nd act also has a incredibly complex and pretty thoughtful / optimistic message to it. I quite like it's take on religion and having ideas of God vs a belief systems based on God. Kevin Smith is a great writer it turns out at least during the 90s. Would love to see Matt Damon do more stuff like this in his current era because i love how unhinged he was in this. I would say Jay & Silent Bob were more toned down as well which is wasn't expecting. Now some of the scenes are mega cringe (such as the mentioned Shit Demon) and I find this one is the most hit or miss joke wise so far for me. But damn the ideas are so well thought out and Alan Rickman plays such a great sassy so I kind of love this. Hopeful for a rerelease so I can pick it up sometime in 2025
]]>The shortest of the series i think but still really cool to see. Fun animation that matches the vibe of Megaman. Just very short like 5 minutes total when most episodes seem to be around 15 minutes
]]>One of the most stunning films visually of the year. The colors, the sets, the cinematography, costumes design, even the shadows all look gorgeous with some really paintings coming to life moments all throughout. The cast is flawless. Lily Rose Depp really surprised me with how vicious and unsettling her performance was. Dafoe and Ineson as doctors is great, wish they were my dads. Nicholas Hoult as our fallen protagonist is another incredible role for him in a year that has really shown him putting in the work with multiple great roles. Aaron Taylor Johnson also acts against his type casting to give a solid albeit depressing as hell character. Bill Skarsgard is unrecognizable as Nosferatu. The makeup is insane. The score was beautiful but I wish i could have heard more of it. I didn't really notice until the final piece just how good it was. I will say the first act was quite a slow burn for me. That might not be a issue though on rewatch. For me I still think Northman is my favorite Eggers film. Robert Eggers now has 4 films that for ke are at least a 4/5 and at this point I think i can comfortably say he's the hottest director who has yet to have a breakout hit. Really hoping this is the one for him! Top 10 of the year for me, sitting right behind Furiosa on my 2024 ranked list. Check this one out in theaters if you can it really is a gorgeous film
]]>Some interesting moments in this dc animated films like some more interesting animation choices in some of the scenes. The characters all get decently fleshed out as well. Unfortunately the majority of the animation is pretty ugly and it might be too many characters for 75 mins. By the end there isn't any time left to flesh out the big villian which leads to the finale being kind of a nothing burger. Better than Superman Doomsday but not very good still
]]>I know very little about Bob Dylan, so for this film to peak my interest and for me enjoying myself while watching A Complete Unknown shows it's a pretty good film. Timothee Chalamet gives a incredible performance here. I think he's gotta be the best actor under 30 right now. Every role is phenomenal and exteme variety seems the norm for what he chooses to do. Elle Fanning & Edward Norton's forehead are both great in this as well. James Mangold does another great job as director and should win some love back after Dial of Destiny (which i did like somewhat as well but that seems to not be well beloved). I can't wait for his Star Wars film, please don't be canceled. I do think if I knew more about Bob Dylan my review could be more positive or maybe even less but as it is I really liked the film with my little knowledge of the subject matter. Won't win best picture but I could see a Chalamet underdog narrative start to form. Nice way to spend Christmas Eve!
]]>I'm a huge fan of the Outer Worlds game. Played through it a few times now. Love that this short felt just like the game writing wise. Great stuff that shows the harsh but ironic style of Outer Worlds. Animation I'm a bit iffy on though. Not sure what it is exactly but I didn't quite find it as striking as the other episodes. Still story makes up for that for me
]]>Haven't seen them all but from what i have seen this is my favorite Kevin Smith film. I love this film. The writing is so much more complex than his other works that it doesnt even feel close to me. The story is great with multiple layers and complex relationships all around. Great commentary even though it is something that seems quite dated looking at it from a 2024 angle. I still think it has a lot of value though. I love the ending and find it very moving in how Holden (Ben Affleck) fumbles so hard while thinking he is making the right choice. Oh and the dialogue comes off way tighter than Kevin Smiths first 2 films you can really see his growth as a filmmaker visually and verbally through Chasing Amy. Some jokes dont land as per the norm with his style and writing and its not as flashy as say Mallrats but for me this is such a personal film and has a level of odd elegance to it that makes it a gem in his filmography. Give it a shot
]]>I really wanna quote like half this film at the top but pretty much every line is a bit too risqué. Maybe just Ben Affleck going "15??? I thought she was 36!"
This is a incredibly flawed film but damn i still really like this one. Its got some of that awkward line delivery from Clerks but I will say most of the characters are a bit more proficient especially Jason Lee. This might be my favorite Jay and Silent Bob plot line. It's just goofy enough without going overboard. Also has my favorite Stan Lee cameo with a great speech. Oh and it ends with a Weezer song? Like how could I hate this? Now again awkward acting is there. Oh and some not funny jokes sprinkled throughout. Also some editing I'm not big on. Still it's unfiltered and definitely a Kevin Smith concoction and idk i just kind of dig it a bit. Solid 3/5 for me
]]>Again slightly below where I expected to rate it. Way funnier than the first one though i gotta say. I think this one has a solid hook and 1st act but the 3rd act is trash. Very rushed and boring finale. All the characters are poorly written as well. Weaker than the 1st film however if you enjoy that one you would enjoy this. I wouldn't say i enjoyed this but would always be down to rewatch these
]]>Back to some good shit again with Secret Level. I love armored core and its nice to see it coming back so strong between this & Fires of Rubicon. Great mech fighting and incredible visuals. Keanu Reeves was a nice surprise as well. Story is a bit much for how short this is but peaks the viewers attention. Maybe someone will check out the game thanks to this. Loving this series but am finding besides the Sifu episode nothing has been exceptional, but nonetheless lots of great episodes
]]>Just a fun short set sometime after Clerks (I'm assuming close to Clerks 2 story wise). Shows the goofiness of hypothetical conversations and fleshed out the 2 leads from the og film. Decent albeit not a lot going on to really hook you in
]]>One of the films that helped jump start the late 90s indie movement albeit not as impactful as Pulp Fiction. This one moreso showed you could make some money with literally no budget. Well a miniscule budget of 27 grand. It also jumpstarted the career of a very decisive director with Kevin Smith. I'm pretty mixed on Kevin Smiths filmography in general however I admire how he has his own tastes and injects that into his films and I do think overall he's had a positive impact in film especially when it comes to the wide acceptability of comic book films in the pre-mcu days.
Clerks still holds up. Its funny and relatable in concept. The cigarette scene near the beginning and the Star Wars discussion are my favorite parts of the film. I do have a issue though and that is the film has the dialogue of a play. In that it doesn't feel realistic how snappy the dialogue is. It feels like people reading from a script. Some of the jokes don't land but most do for me. It's a solid time and I'm curious to see if the rest of the films in the View Askewniverse hold up.
]]>Just like the DnD episode incredible visuals but the story is very generic & barebones. The thene of everyone views themselves as not the bad guy has about as much impact here as when Ben Affleck Daredevil says it. Worst episode so far and hopefully stays the worst as I wrap the series up
]]>What a perfect trilogy. I've seen it like a dozen times now and still just such a grand time each viewing. It's insane how there is like 20+ important characters and every single one of them is incredibly fleshed out with motives, emotions, and goals of their own. It's such a incredibly complex web that interfaces throughout all 3 films. This finale gives the big climaxes that the trilogy has built up and is just such a epic way to wrap these films up. One of the biggest achievements in cinema truly. 4 hour extended cut and ill watch it every single time because that's how good this film is. I still prefer Fellowship but that and this one are both top 20 film picks for me (and two towers isn't far behind as well). Will never see something like this happen again I'm sure of it and so glad I am alive at the time this is in the pop culture zeitgeist. Truly a must see trilogy for every single person on this app
]]>Starts off pretty ok with the doomsday 1st act. However the rest of the film is a doppelganger story and this is one of the worst comic doppelganger arcs I've seen. Very boring and surface level. Animation also is subpar compared to the other dc animated films (granted this is considered the 1st of the series dating back from 2007-present time) . Overall not as good as what ive seen from this series so far but not outright terrible either
]]>Kind of insane that this is a film. Some incredibly horrendous shots in this. Just Simmons making 700k just to show up and sleep i gotta respect it. Chris Evans had a moment if greatness in Snowpiercer & a few years later with Knives Out but now has a huge string of awful films. Dwayne Johnson i think everyone knows at this point the type of roles he does. Cgi is averaging out to pretty bad. Its also a christmas movie which in already not a big fan of. I cant think of many positives at all, this feels like a fake movie from a Saints Row billboard. I'm glad I skipped this one in theaters as I probably would have had a moment of clarity finally
]]>Love the concept, execution leaves something to be desired. Not as strong as the previous 4 episodes but still solid. Cool visuals and love the theme of it.
