I love this movie so much. Because it’s not just about Star Wars, you know? It’s not just a silly movie about nerds and dick jokes. That’s what was so irritating about the critical reaction. Roger Ebert said it “identifies too closely with its heroes.” But that’s the whole point! It’s a movie about what it’s like to be with people who share your fervor for something that most other people in your life (or the world) think is a waste of time. It’s about the draw of a subculture, the positive side of us-against-them. It’s not for everyone; it’s for us.
the director of this would go on to promote conspiracy theories about critics being bribed to like The Last Jedi and it was co-written by the writer of Ready Player One, in case you're wondering why this putrid carcass of pop culture fetishization without identity is such a waste of time. strong contender for the worst film ever made.
not as good as The Last Boy Scout
(edit) the opposite of The Last Boy Scout
This may set a record for the most poorly ADR’d off-camera punch-up jokes per minute in the history of cinema. If so, it makes sense, given the tortured production history. Still: The amount of lines delivered by characters with their backs turned to the camera, in voices that sound nothing like the ones recorded on-set, is absolutely ridiculous. None of them are funny. All of them are sweaty. So sweaty.
Some of the structural parallels to Star Wars are cute. I chuckled during William Shatner’s scene. Otherwise, this could be the worst Kevin Smith movie Kevin Smith never made. (He does have a small cameo.) Between the rampant misogyny and homophobia and the eye-popping names of some of the folks who produced this thing and you’re left with a fascinating (and quite icky) time capsule of 2000s fandom and nerd culture at its worst.
how the fuck did they not notice carrie fisher and billy dee williams right in front of them? fake fans.
I feel most bad for the guy with cancer. Not because he had cancer but because he had to watch a ROUGH cut of The Phantom Menace.
I love this film not only for it's Star Wars theme but for it's representation of fanboy culture in general. The 90s and 00s were a great time before social media took over.
“Fanboys — a movie some adore, most have forgotten, left its creators with a mild case of PTSD, and represents the tipping point for when nerd culture was no longer niche.”
Before Ernest Cline earned himself a reputable status for his novel Ready Player One, he embarked on a journey to tell the story of Star Wars fans who waited in limbo throughout the sixteen years awaiting the highly anticipated Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999). In regards to why it took George Lucas almost two decades to release another Star Wars film — he revealed that he had technical limitations and wasn’t able to properly convey his story. In an article written by Lucas himself he…
I love Fanboys. I really love this movie. I love the cast. I love the jokes. I love the references. I just love everything about it. It's a brilliant idea for a movie. This is just one of those movies that makes me really happy whenever I watch it.
So, when I saw The Force Awakens and I got home and really thought about what I saw and realized how disappointed I was I needed something to get my Star Wars spirits back up.
I didn't want to start the old trilogy that night because 3 movies felt like too much of a commitment and too much effort and I didn't want to be reminded of how much The Force…
May the force be with me for this review.
(The Average Joe’s Movie Club Cast Episode 5 Part III)
Time to turn off your brain and pull out your lightsaber, as we follow a group of Star Wars obsessed Fanboys who set out on a quest a long time ago in a galaxy far far away, when the Star Wars franchise only included the original trilogy.
"Greatest deed Luke Skywalker ever did was take down the Death Star, right? As far as I'm concerned, that's what everybody needs. You need that one bad-ass thing that lets you live on forever, you know."
I have not watched many dumb but fun comedies recently, so it was a bit of an adjustment…
Less charming than I remember. Produced by Harvey Weinstein, Exec Producer Kevin Spacey, cowritten by Ernest Cline. What a team.
" e se o filme for um lixo?"
Tiveram toda essa trabalheira pro cara ver uma versão não finalizada do episódio I, como se o câncer já não fosse sofrimento bastante pro coitado
