  Me: "Ahhhhh this movie is total shit! I can't wait to see Letterboxd agree with me."

  Me: "Hold on what?"

  Letterboxd: "This movie is great."

  Me: "What about when the bad guy literally has a gun on James Bond and instead of killing him, he puts him in an airplane that has a timer that openly counts down until it will shoot a rocket at itself. The bad guy leaves him there without any guards watching and a big red ejection button beside him that says EJECT in giant letters. That decision is more expensive, time consuming, and idiotic than the bad guy just killing him. It's in my top five dumbest things I've seen on film."

  My love for this film extends beyond rational scales. I just think it’s perfect, even the imperfections just add to its overall perfectness in some weird, inverted way.

  I could ramble on about everything I love so I’ll just say that the cinema screening I just saw it at tonight was terrific. The sound mix was especially lovely and I noticed things in there that I hadn’t picked up on before. Small things in the grand scheme (things like Xenia and the Admiral chatting and laughing as they head to the boat while Bond watches) but I’ve seen this film about three hundred times so these things stick out.

  FAMKE JANSEN OMG

  Martin Campbell is responsible for TWO reboots of the franchise; this and Casino Royale. Both pushing the direction of Bond forward in equally creative ways. While people frequently credit Casino Royale for this, it’s impossible to overlook how much Goldeneye changed for the franchise. Relative to License to Kill, this film feels fresh and exciting, ready for the post Cold War era.

  This movie wouldn’t work quite as well without its stellar script and supporting cast. There isn’t much filler here, a lot of action, and the back story is quite interesting as well.   A Bond film that easily ranks among the very best of the franchise, Martin Campbell's "GoldenEye" is a spirited, handsome, and fully involving action epic. With its pitch-perfect leading man, gripping real-world plotting, and invitingly grand scale, the film thrills, entertains, and makes for a completely memorable experience.

  Introducing Pierce Brosnan as James Bond, "GoldenEye" revolves around the super spy's attempt to disrupt a plot to use an EMP weapon on the unsuspecting world. The story is rich with post-Cold War intrigue, featuring narrative beats that are impressively realistic for a James Bond film.   My kid had never seen a James Bond movie, and while I do t think they’re mandatory viewing, I thought it might be a fun way to see out 2024. As entry points go, I considered Casino Royale, but the genital torture scene nixed that. And I wanted something reasonably modern. So I went with the other Martin Campbell, and by far the best Brosnan. 

  In terms of pure action, Brosnan is arguably the best Bond, though Craig and Lazenby both have good cases. (And Moore is by far the worst.)
