Never Say Never Again is usually remembered as the non-EON James Bond production that saw Sean Connery's return to the role after a 12-year absence. I think it should be remembered as the one where James Bond throws a vile of his own pee in someone's face.
I don't really care if this one's canonical or not; I care about having a good time, and Never Say Never Again kind of, sort of, a little bit delivers. Having already declared this the year I'm going to finally watch up on all the classic Bonds, I had to break chronology—and brave our first big snowstorm of the year—when I found out the the off-brand one no one likes was going to be playing a rare film print. Gets the slight edge over THUNDERBALL only in the action department; the underwater sequences have some actual speed and dynamism, and there's a pretty nifty auto chase with a couple sweet jumps and car flips (although this may simply be the result of better available tech). Other than that this really drives home just how much of a Bond film's success is look-and-feel dependent. Despite impeccable-as-usual craft there's just something off about the whole thing. Kershner's and the great Douglas Slocombe's frames have the right simple economy, but the editing lacks the snap you'd get from John Glen or Peter Hunt. I’m kind of glad this exists as a weird, parallel reality Bond film but damn is it a slog.
Connery is on good form and Barbara Carrera is a blast but that’s where the positives end for me. Never liked the villain and the music is positively ruinous.

Sean Connery's return to James Bond after 12 years. The film is based on Thunderball. Connery somehow seems older in this then in The Rock. There was two James Bonds films that year. The movie has great Bond girls like: Kim Basinger and Barbara Carrera. I forgot Rowan Atkinson has a cameo in the film. He is quite funny in his small part.
Roger Moore's final Bond movie is definitely more fun than Connery's. But this has some fun 80's moments. Bond gets into a killer Space Invaders type game with the main bad guy.
It is too long I actually forgot what was going after awhile. It needed to be trimmed down by 30 minutes. It's not a great Connery outing.
100-word review: Another Thunderball, no really. "Sean Connery is James Bond 007" says the tagline of Never Say Never Again — beckoning no insecurity rivalling Eon Productions' franchise at all — and he very well could be (although I'm not certain director Irvin Kershner believes this, considering the revitalisation 'training montage' he puts his star through), but Salem certainly isn't Moneypenny! If the dumb arcade game scene is this film's attempt at trying something new, I'd rather they kept things as they were. Entertaining still, until the gun fighting and scuba diving goes up, and Brandauer's powerhouse performance down in terms of screen time.
Thunderball, take two. This has less spectacle than the original, but it in a way it feels fitting for a movie with an older Bond. Never Say Never Again has very solid bad guys in Klaus Maria Brandauer, Barbara Carrera (🔥) and Max von Sydow (he needed to have more screentime), but I can't say the actors portraying the MI6 staff worked for me. Bernie Casey as Felix was great though.
Flawed, at times bland, but still a good enough time, especially when watched with a fun watch partner.
The off-brand Bond movie, released towards the end of the Roger Moore era, that features a fiftysomething Sean Connery reprising the role. Unlike Moore, who was three years older than him, Connery is actually playing an older Bond here. However, that doesn’t really have more than cosmetic impact on the plot, which once again sees Bond prowling around and pawing up young lovelies, this time with a paunch and off-the-rack business-casual shirts tucked into his slacks that make him look like the hottest divorced dad at the high-school graduation ceremony. He also wears a toupee that, in my opinion, is not very convincing. They should have had the confidence to let him be bald. He’s Sean Connery for fuck’s sake.…
So here we are.. Bond-A-Thon challenge- failed.
I had so much faith in myself that i’ll make it until “No Time To Die” without breaks. I watched all the 13 Bond flicks that came out before this one without a single problem. I guess this one just bored the shit out of me😭
I thought that i’ll like “Never Say Never Again” a lot, since it’s a remake of “Thunderball”, (which im not very fond of as a movie, but i can always find something positive to say about it)
In my opinion, this remake doesn't really make a significant improvement over the original.
Since we got to see some pretty cool death scenes, it deserves a higher rating.
