Every director has to start somewhere. For James Cameron, it just happened to be a movie about genetically modified flying piranhas.
Wait, they gave the guy who directed this several hundred million dollars to make ANOTHER movie about weird underwater creatures that can somehow fly?!? Never change, Hollywood.
I actually prefer this James Cameron directed sequel to the Joe Dante original. Piranha II: Flying Killers/The Spawning is just more consistent in delivering B-movie thrills. When it opens with two scuba divers having a little under water fuck session, you know exactly what kind of movie you are in for.
I had a blast revisiting this with Michelle.
A new Blank Check miniseries begins. An absolute bore, except for Lance Henriksen's laser glare and every scene set underwater. Cameron's obsessions: there from the start.

On a side note, Jim Cameron was right. This is the best flying fish movie ever made.
Yeah it’s the pits but seeing with a bunch of friends it almost deserves 4 stars so I guess my heart covers that.
Love how half the movie is out of focus, like the focus puller just quit.
Also the sexual tension between the mom and son is CRAZY.

Now this is more like it! My biggest complaint with the original was that it was too tame for a movie about genetically enhanced piranhas. This one definitely ups the ante. It has far more silliness, over-the-top mayhem (these bastards can fly now) and best of all.. boobies!
Sequel to Joe Dante's original 1978 Jaws rip off. Piranha 2 is most famous for the fact that it counts as the directorial debut of James Cameron, aswell as numerous production issues and various claims as to how much the director actually worked on the film. Whatever the truth about that, Piranha II: The Spawning runs on similar lines to the first one, only this time the plot makes even less sense and the mutant killer fish now have the ability to fly. this is pretty pervy, i guess everybody who was shocked by james cameron's comments about his sexy alien avatar babes never saw this. the opening credits are amazing and the rest of the movie doesn't quite live up to them, and i didn't totally fall in love with it, but this gets SO CRAZY and gross that i have to respect it. and as a historical document i think it's pretty funny that cameron started his career nerding out on wrecked ships
