  This is like an actually pretty good movie with a very interesting concept and then the ending is like "oh, you're liking this? Well here's some bullshit".

  Seriously, this is such a fun and thrilling movie until it decides it wants to be stupid as fuck for no reason in the last fifteen minutes or so.

  What an oddity. First watch since opening weekend back in 2009. My dad took me expecting some sort of Day After Tomorrow disaster flick and instead we received a rumination on death and the extinction of humanity. Scared the fuck out of me then, still does now to an extent, in spite of how absurd it all is. Nicolas Cage gives a great performance that is balanced between his National Treasure blockbuster charisma and his off-the-wall experimental outbursts. Knowing only features a couple expertly choreographed disaster sequences, but it's one of the few depressing blockbuster ventures of the time to actually ponder the hopeless nature of the images it's displaying.   Had a laugh when Nic Cage demonstrated his alcoholism by pouring a glass full of scotch until it was overflowing. Had several other laughs but none of them as beautiful as that.

  i like how ruthlessly this trades on the anxieties of single and estranged parents which -- astonishingly, given how deeply silly this is -- manages to dovetail quite nicely with its apocalypse paranoia and stoner dorm-room spirituality. plus that plane crash sequence is pretty gnarly.

  loved this, genuinely moved by nic's fatalistic drunk obsessing over keelian ultraterrestrial prophecies of eden/nibiru/noah/planet x--revealingly, on the directors commentary proyas refers to the mib annunaki-angels as "strangers" (like dark city) not "watchers" or whisper ppl or whatever(!)--uniquely polysemantic, challenging, personal & weird, maybe the most 2009 multiplex-popaganda movie ever made; despite some xxtremely 2011 color grading this is shyamalan/aronofsky level emotional, philosophical blockbuster filmmaking & made me think abt death & loss in a very real way.
